Hoover Named Hockey Captain for 2019-20 Season

Canisius hockey head coach Trevor Large has announced that senior forward Matt Hoover has been named team captain for the 2019-20 season.

"Matt has the unique ability to earn respect," Large said. "His commitment, work ethic and determination define his demeanor as a hockey player. His willingness to serve his teammates and drive all of us to get better defines his leadership. Matt has a contagious attitude built on being a positive, competitive and team-first person. I know how Matt faces challenges; head-on with everything to drive his team forward.

"Selecting the right person for the right job is a large part of coaching. I know Matt is the right person to lead our group this season."

A native of Brantford, Ontario, Hoover has appeared in 112 games during his first three seasons with the Golden Griffins, amassing 35 goals and 37 assists for 67 points.

Last season, Hoover appeared in 35 games for Canisius, finishing the campaign sixth on the team's scoring chart with 21 points on 11 goals and 10 assists. He finished the season on a strong note, recording 12 points (7g, 5a) over his final 15 games played.

As a sophomore, Hoover was one of five skaters to appear in all 38 games, helping guide Canisius to the semifinals of the Atlantic Hockey Association Tournament. He ranked third on team in goals (14) and fourth in points (26), with half of his points (9g, 4a) coming in the final 11 games of season.

"It means everything to be named captain of the Canisius hockey team for the 2019-20 season," Hoover said. "When you're playing hockey, you want to be the leader of every team your on. You want to be the guy that everyone looks up and respects. This year, it's my goal to gain the respect of all 29 guys on our team.

"In order to gain their respect, I have to carry myself in a way that I haven't done so in my first three years here. I need to be more aware of everything that's going on around me and make sure that I am taking care of everyone else on our team. If I do that, I feel I can earn the respect of everyone and that would a true honor for me."
