Golf Goes Low to Close Out Cornell Invitational

The Canisius golf team posted a score of 289 in the third round, highlighted by senior David Hanes and his one-under-par score of 70, as the Golden Griffins took 10th place at the Cornell Invitational at the Robert Trent Jones Course in Ithaca, N.Y.

The team score of 289 is the lowest for the Griffs this season, and the 10th place finish is the program's best in a 54-hole event since the Blue and Gold placed seventh at the 2018 Titans Motown Collegiate tournament.

GRIFFS LINEUP
Hanes ended the three-round event tied for seventh with his tournament score of 215, which stands as his lowest career tally for a 54-hole tournament. Junior Matt Genaway shot an even-par 71 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 21st, while senior Jaret Chipman tied for 49th in the field after he shot a 76 on Sunday for a three-round tally of 227. Junior Michael Wells and freshman Shane Broad finished tied for 57th at the tournament field, with Broad recording a season-low 73 in the final round on Sunday.

TEAM LEADERBOARD
Columbia held on to defeat Bucknell by one stroke in the team portion of the tournament. The Lions shot a three-round score of 814, one stroke better than Bucknell and three strokes ahead of host Cornell. St. Bonaventure and Dartmouth rounded out the top-five.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD
Michael O'Brien from Saint Joseph's fired a five-under score of 66 on Sunday to win individual medalist honors at the tournament. Daniel Core, who led after 36 holes, posted a 72 and finished second with 210 strokes, three back of O'Brien's winning effort.

NEXT ON THE TEE
Canisius will return to action Sept. 29-Oct. 1 when the team travels to play at the UConn Collegiate Invitational in Hampden, Mass.
