Outdoor Track Completes Day One of MAAC Championships

The Canisius men's and women's outdoor track programs concluded day one of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships from Kessler Stadium in West Long Branch, N.J.

After six scored events on day one, the Blue and Gold sit in eighth place in both the men's and women's team standings.

Senior Kayla Stewart finished seventh in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 11:16.81. The time was less than a second off her career-best time of 11:15.39, which she set during last year's conference championships.

Sophomore Connor Doran and senior Josh Sopchak recorded times of 1:55.29 and 1:55.77 in the 800, just missing out on qualifying for Sunday's final.

Senior Aileen Doyle finished with a mark of 38:16.74 in the women's 10K earning seventh place overall. Junior Anthony Belfatto also had a strong outing in the men's 10K as he crossed the line in 10th place with a time of 32:06.58.

Junior Rachel Joachimi and senior Hannah Latragna posted notable times in the women's 800-meter prelims, crossing the line in 2:24.37 and 2:26.39.

Friday night the MAAC announced the 2019 Men's and Women's Outdoor Track All-Academic Teams. The conference office honored a total of 23 Canisius student-athletes.

On the men's side, Belfatto, Henry Burton, Patrick Crowley, Alex Cambria, Turner Dirrigl, Doran, Nick Neamtu, Austin Oetinger, Sopchak, Nicholas Spinosa and Brandon Williams were all honored by the league.

For the women, Christian Conner, Doyle, Isabella Iadicicco, Isabella Jankowski, Joachimi, Jackie Lamica, Latragna, Vivian Mroz, Siobhan Quinn, Katie Simon and Leah Wardner all received the all-academic designation.
