Golf Shares Title at Rain-Shortened Matthews Auto Event

The Canisius golf team earned a share of the 2019 Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational team championship and junior Matt Genaway and sophomore Mike Donner tied for individual medalist honors after the second round of the event was washed out due to heavy rains Monday morning at the Links at Hiawatha in Apalachin, N.Y.

As a team, Canisius shares the 2019 Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational team championship with MAAC rival Rider, after both squads shot 285 (-3) in the opening round on Sunday. That score of 285 is the lowest for the program since the Blue and Gold posted a 284 in the opening round of the 2009 Bucknell Fall Invite

Genaway and Donner are the first Griffs to earn individual medalist honors since teammate David Hanes won the 2016 Little Three Championship. The duo also become the first Canisius golfers to earn individual medalist honors at an event other than the Little Three Championship since former Griff Drew Creighton won the 2007 Robert Morris Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Genaway and Donner are the first Griffs to shoot in the 60s during a round since Genaway and Hanes each carded sub-70 rounds in a dual match against Niagara Sept. 23, 2017. Genaway's four-under-par 68 is one stroke off his career-low 67, set in that dual match against Niagara, while Donner's four-under-par score of 68 is his new collegiate career low.

The Griffs will close out the 2019 fall season Oct. 13-14 at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.
