Golf Tied for the Lead After One Round in Binghamton

Canisius junior Matt Genaway and sophomore Mike Donner are tied atop the individual leaderboard after both players shot 68, and the Golden Griffin golf team is tied with Rider for first after posting a team score of 285 in the opening round of the 2019 Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational, played Sunday afternoon at the Links at Hiawatha in Apalachin, N.Y.

Genaway and Donner are the first Canisius duo to shoot in the 60s during a round since Genaway and teammate David Hanes each carded sub-70 rounds in a dual match against Niagara Sept. 23, 2017. Genaway's four-under-par 68 is one stroke off his career-low 67, set in that dual match against Niagara, while Donner's four-under-par score of 68 is his new collegiate career low.

GRIFFS LINEUP
After playing even-par through eight holes, Genaway got it rolling at the turn, as he ripped off four-straight birdies to get to four-under through 12 holes. After he posted bogey on holes No. 13 and 17, the Darien Center, N.Y., native moved into a first-place tie with his teammate after he carded an eagle-3 on the par-5 18th hole. Donner started and finished his day with eagles, as he carded an eagle-2 on the par-4 first hole before closing his round with an eagle-3 on 18. Donner made the turn with a one-under score of 35, moved to two-under with a birdie on the par-4 16 and then closed out his round with the eagle on 18.

Senior Jaret Chipman is tied for 15th in the field after he shot 73, while junior Michael Wells carded a 76 to place him in a tied for 36th.

TEAM LEADERBOARD
The Griffs' team score of 285 is the lowest for the program since the Blue and Gold posted a 284 in the opening round of the 2009 Bucknell Fall Invite, which also marks the last time the Canisius led or were tied for a tournament lead as a team in an event with five or more teams. The Griffs are tied with MAAC rival Rider atop the team scoreboard, as both the Griffs and Broncs are five shots in front of third-place Laval (+2), 11 strokes ahead of fourth-place Saint Peter's (+8) and 12 strokes better than Siena and Monmouth, which are tied for fifth at plus-9 after 18 holes.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD
Genaway and Donner are one stroke ahead of group of three players who posted three-under par scores of 69 in the opening round. A total of 14 golfers shot even-par or better on Sunday in the first round.

NEXT ON THE TEE
Canisius will close out its stay at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational on Monday when the tournament plays the second round. Tee time is set for 9 a.m.
