Baseball Opens Weekend With 5-3 Win Over Fordham

The Canisius baseball team improved to 7-2 on the season on Friday, with a 5-3, come-from-behind victory over Fordham in Wilson, N.C. The Griffs used runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to spark the comeback. With the loss Fordham drops to 1-6 overall.

Canisius opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, plating a run, before Fordham knotted it up and went ahead with a two-run top of the third.

Fordham extended its lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth, before the Griffs made their move, plating a run in the bottom of the frame and two in the bottom of the fifth. Canisius added another insurance marker in the bottom of the eighth to, help seal the deal.

Canisius got offense from the top of the order as Liam Wilson tallied a pair of hits and one run, while Jake Lumley and Ryan Stekl continued their strong starts with a pair of hits each. Lumley also notched an RBI in the win.

The back half the lineup also got into the act as Joseph Preziuso, John Novenche and Cyrus Senior were all responsible for RBI.

Zachary Sloan got the start on the bump, and turned in a quality start, going five innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs, while fanning four as he earned his first win of the year.

Brennan Smith came on in relief and worked 2.2 innings and yielded just one hit and struck out three in his outing.

Tyler Smith earned his first save of the season, as he worked 1.1 innings and held the Rams without a hit, and recorded a pair of strikeouts.

Justin Bardwell and Luke Stampfl recorded a pair of hits and RBI each for the Rams, while Billy Godrick also tallied a hit and RBI.

Canisius is back in action tomorrow as two-squad matchup again for a double-header, with the first game starting at noon. The series concludes on Sunday as the teams faceoff at 10:30 a.m.
