The Canisius hockey team closes out its November slate this weekend with an Atlantic Hockey Conference series at Army West Point.
 
The Golden Griffins and Black Knights open their two-game set Friday with a 7:05 p.m. contest at Tate Rink. The teams wrap up their weekend slate in a 4:05 p.m. matinee Saturday.
 
Scouting Canisius
  • The Golden Griffins (6-4-1, 6-4-0 AHC) take to the road for the third time in four weeks after posting a sweep of league foe Bentley last weekend at KeyBank Rink at HARBORCENTER.
  • Junior Dylan McLaughlin remains atop the Canisius scoring chart with a league-high 18 points (7g, 11a). McLaughlin enters the weekend riding a seven-game point-scoring streak that has seen him record 12 points (5g, 7a) in that span.
  • Senior Ryan Schmelzer sits second in scoring with 14 points (6g, 8a). Schmelzer has accounted for two of the three game-winning goals current the Griffs' current winning streak.
  • Sophomore Nick Hutchison ranks third with 10 points on five goals and five assists. Hutchison has tallied a point in five of the Griffs' last seven contests.
  • Sophomore Daniel Urbani has started the last three contests in goal for Canisius, posting a .935 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average during the Griffs' current winning streak.   
  • The power play continues to be effective as the Griffs are 14-of-52 (.269) with the man advantage thus far this season, ranking seventh nationally in that category.
  • Canisius enters the weekend ranked seventh in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 3.55 goals per game. The Griffs have recorded two or more goals in 10 of 11 games played this season.
 
Griffs Record Home Sweep of AHC Foe Bentley
  • Canisius extended its winning streak to three games with a sweep of visiting Bentley last weekend at HARBORCENTER.
  • The Griffs posted a 5-1 victory in the opener before rallying from a 2-0 deficit for a 5-2 victory in the series finale.
  • Canisius extended its unbeaten versus Bentley to 10 games (8-0-2) with the sweep of the Falcons, dating back to the end of the 2013-14 season.
  • Junior Matt McLeod tallied multiple points in a game for the second time in his career with a goal and an assist in the series opener.
  • Sophomore Nick Hutchison tallied two or more points in a contest for the second time this season and the seventh time in his career with a goal and an assist in the first game of the series.
  • Senior Ryan Schmelzer recorded his 10th career game-winning goal with his third-period tally in the series finale, moving him into sole possession of second place on the program's career game-winning goals list.
  • Schmelzer's two-goal effort also moved into a tie with Carl Hudson (2006-10) for 12th place on the program's division I era career scoring list with 90 points (33g, 57a).
  • Junior Dylan McLaughlin posted multiple points in a game for the sixth time this season and the 20th time in his career. McLaughlin also extended his point-scoring streak to seven games with assists in both games of the series.
  • Senior Jack Stander recorded his first goal since Jan. 23, 2016 with his power-play goal in the second period.
 
Student vs. Teacher
  • Canisius first-year head coach Trevor Large faces one of his mentors his weekend in Army West Point head coach Brian Riley.
  • Prior to joining the Canisius program as an assistant coach for the 2014-15 season, Large spent six years with the Black Knights (2008-14), serving as the program's assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under the veteran Riley.
  • During his time at West Point, Large worked with all facets of the program – forwards, defensemen, power play and penalty kill – helping coach six all-conference performers and three selections to the league's all-rookie team.
  • He also served as the team's video coordinator.
Scouting Army West Point
  • The Black Knights (6-5-2, 6-5-2 AHC) return home thanksgiving weekend after playing to a 5-5 tie at league foe Sacred Heart on Tuesday.
  • Sophomores Michael Wilson (9g, 6a) and Dominic Franco (5g, 8a) have paced the Black Knights attack in the early going, ranking first and second on the team's scoring chart with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
  • Senior Tyler Pham (3g, 9a) and junior Dalton MacAfee (2g, 10a) have also gotten off to solid starts for Army with 12 points apiece. 
  • Senior goaltender Cole Burns has taken over the goaltending duties for the departed Parker Gahagen, starting all 13 games for the Black Knights this season. In 748 of minutes of action, Burns has compiled a 2.41 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. 
Canisius-Army West Point Series Notes
  • Canisius holds an all-time record of 24-25-6 against Army West Point. The Griffs hold a slim 22-20-6 edge over the Black Knights in the Division I era of the series.
  • The schools have been evenly matched in recent contests, as the teams have split their last 12 matchups (5-5-2).
  • Canisius holds a 7-13-3 record against Army West Point in true road contests. The Griffs are 4-4-0 in their last eight contests versus the Black Knights at Tate Rink, dating back to the 2011-12 season.
  • The teams played a total of four times during the 2016-17 regular season.  Army West Point swept the first series at home in mid-November (3-0; 5-2) before Canisius responded by claiming three-of-four points in a February series at HARBORCENTER (4-0; 2-2).
