Hockey Edged by Ryerson In Exhibition, 3-2

Senior Ryan Schmelzer scored both Canisius goals, but Ryerson took advantage of two power play tallies to defeat the Golden Griffins, 3-2, in a collegiate hockey exhibition contest Friday at KeyBank Rink in HARBORCENTER.

Marcus Hinds netted the eventual game-winning goal early in the third while Gregory Di Tomaso and Steven Harland added man-advantage tallies for the Rams.

Mario Culina recorded 36 saves between the pipes for Ryerson, highlighted by a game-high 17 saves during the third period as Canisius out-shot the Rams by a 38-20 margin.

Ryerson opened the scoring at the 7:24 mark of the first period when Di Tomaso found the upper right hand-corner of the net with a wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle during a Rams power play opportunity.

Harland doubled the Ryerson advantage to 2-0 midway through the second period, putting home a backdoor feed from Aaron Armstrong during a 5-on-3 situation.

Schmelzer cut the Griffs deficit in half with a little more than three minutes remaining in the middle frame, jamming home a loose puck just seconds after a Canisius power play opportunity expired to make it a 2-1 contest.

Hinds restored the Rams' two-goal cushion at the 7:44 mark of the third, finishing off a cross-ice feed from Kyle Tibbo in transition to make it a 3-1 contest.

Schmelzer kept the Griffs within striking distance with his second of the contest at the 16:39 mark of the third, finishing off a goalmouth scramble to trim the Canisius deficit to 3-2.

That would be as close as the Griffs would get, however, as the Rams held on for the one-goal triumph.

Sophomore Daniel Urbani got the start in goal for Canisius and played the first period, recording six saves. Sophomore Blake Weyrick played the second period and made eight stops. Junior Simon Hofley was in net for the Griffs in the third period, recording three saves.

Junior Dylan McLaughlin dished out two assists while fellow junior Felix Chamberland also picked up a helper.

Head Coach Trevor Large Postgame Comments
"I was very happy with the first look at the team. There was a lot of energy coming out of our locker room tonight, especially early in periods. We were looking for that as well as second and third efforts, and a lot of creativity offensively. I was really pleased with the amount of plays we were making as a whole tonight.

"We do have to clean up some things, like our penalty kill, which gave up two power play goals tonight. But, overall, It was a very positive effort."
