Canisius hockey continues its season-opening homestand Saturday when it welcomes ECAC Hockey foe Colgate to KeyBank Rink in HARBORCENTER for a 7:35 p.m. contest.
 
Pink the Rink Set for Saturday
  • Saturday's contest serves as the team's Pink the Rink game, supporting the American Cancer Society's Real Mean Wear Pink initiative.
  • The first 500 fans in attendance will receive free pink thundersticks.
  • Canisius head coach Trevor Large is wearing pink each day in October as part of the campaign.
  • Fans who donate $100 to his campaign through this link will receive four tickets to Saturday's contest.
  • Canisius will also donate $3 of every ticket purchased through this link for Saturday's game to Large's campaign.
     
Scouting Canisius
  • Canisius (1-1-0) earned a split of its season-opening series against Atlantic Hockey Conference foe Robert Morris last weekend.
  • Junior Dylan McLaughlin leads the Golden Griffins in scoring with a goal and three assists after posting multiple points in both games of the series against the Colonials.
  • Sophomore Nick Hutchison tallied three power play goals during the series, including the game-winning goal in the series finale on Saturday. Hutchison was named the AHC Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.
  • Senior Ryan Schmelzer chipped in a goal and assist while junior Ian Edmondson and sophomore Matt Hoover dished out two assists each.
  • Sophomore goaltender Daniel Urbani picked up his first collegiate victory in the series finale, stopping 23-of-24 shots in the 4-1 triumph in the series finale.
 
Canisius Opens 2017-18 Season with Split Versus Robert Morris
  • Canisius began the 2017-18 campaign last weekend a split of its Atlantic Hockey Conference series against Robert Morris at KeyBank Rink in HARBORCENTER.
  • In the series opener, the Colonials took a 3-0 lead before Canisius countered with three goals in a 4:58 span early in the third to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Spencer Dorowicz spoiled the Griffs' comeback bid, however, tallying the game-winning goal with four minutes remaining in regulation to give RMU the 4-3 victory.
  • The series finale saw the teams trade goals 27 seconds apart early in the first period before sophomore Nick Hutchison tallied a pair of power play goals, including the game-winning marker, to spark Canisius to a 4-1 triumph.
  • The Griffs out-shot Robert Morris in both contests, holding a 33-26 edge in the opener and enjoying a 31-24 margin in the finale.
 
Scouting Colgate
  • The Raiders (2-2-1) wrap up a three-game road swing with Saturday's visit to HARBORCENTER.
  • Defensemen Willie Brooks (4a) and Nick Austin (1g, 3a) are tied for the team lead in scoring with four points each.
  • Forwards Jared Cockrell (3g) and Bobby McMann (1g, 2a) are tied for second with three points each.
  • Veteran head coach Don Vaughan has used three goaltenders in the early going, with sophomore Colton Point seeing a majority of action. Point, a 2016 draft pick of the Dallas Stars (128th overall), has fashioned a 1.30 goals against average and a .960 save percentage in three appearances.
 
Canisius-Colgate Series Notes
  • Saturday's contest serves as the seventh meeting between the two Empire State foes
  • The Raiders hold a 5-1 lead in the series that dates back to the 1987-88 season.
  • The home team has won all six meetings in the series, including a 7-6 overtime triumph by the Griffs in the Raiders previous visit to Buffalo on Dec. 20, 2009.
  • The two teams last met on Dec. 30, 2011, a 5-2 Colgate victory in Hamilton.

Hutchison Named AHC Offensive Player of the Week
  • Sophomore forward Nick Hutchison was named the Atlantic Hockey Conference Team Travel USA Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday.
  • A native of Hicksville, N.Y., Hutchison recorded three power play goals to help lead the Golden Griffins to a split of their season-opening series against Robert Morris last weekend at HARBORCENTER.
  • Hutchison ignited a third-period comeback in Canisius' first contest against the Colonials on Oct. 13, recording a man-advantage tally at the 4:58 mark of the final frame to spark a three-goal comeback that saw the Griffs find the back of the net three times in less than five minutes to tie the game at 3-3.  
  • In the series finale, Hutchison tallied two power play goals, including the game-winning marker, to lead Canisius to a 4-1 victory over RMU.  
  • Hutchison enters the weekend tied with St. Cloud State's Jimmy Schuldt for the national lead in power play goals scored.

  • Canisius completes its season-opening homestand Oct. 27-28 when it hosts defending Atlantic Hockey Conference tournament champion Air Force for a two-game series.
