Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y – The Canisius baseball team bounced back after an 0-2 Friday, to take the series finale against Siena, 16-4 on Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. With the win, Canisius improves to 12-15 overall and 4-2 in MAAC play, while Siena drops to 7-18 overall and 3-3 in conference acation.
The Canisius offense which struggled in Friday's twin bill, particularly in the second game of the doubleheader, exploded for 15 hits and 16 runs on Saturday, led by the efforts for sophomore slugger, Ryan Stekl. Stekl finished the game with three hits and seven RBI, including a home run and a bases-clearing double.
Tim Kensinger and Jake Lumley also did damage for the Blue and Gold as Kensinger finished with two hits and three RBI, while Lumley concluded the game with two hits and two RBI.
Andrew Kneussle got the start but it was very much a pitching staff by-committee approach, as five different hurlers saw action. Kneussle and Nolan Hunt both worked 1.2 innings and surrendered seven hits and three runs between the pair.
Andrew Sipowicz worked an inning, with Tyler Smith relieving him and working a strong 2.2 innings, where he allowed just one hit and fanned three to earn the win. Iannick Remillard worked the final two innings, allowed one hit and held the Saints scoreless.
The Griffs had two big innings to spark the win, which came in the bottom of the second and the bottom of the eighth inning.
In the bottom of the second the Griffs got it started thanks to a failed pick off attempt which Siena stater Chris Amorosi tossed wide of his target. That scored Joseph Preziuso from third.
Lumley then came to the plate and singled through the right side to drive in Cyrus Senior.
The greatest damage was done off the bat of Stekl who launched a three-run homerun over the wall in right-center to end the frame with the Girffs up 7-1.
With the score 10-4, the Blue and Gold left no-doubt in the bottom of the eighth. After recording the first two outs of the frame, Saints reliever Tim Zehnbauer came unraveled. He first allowed a walk to Adam Tricarico, followed by two-straight hits to Preziuso and Christ Conley, as Conley's knock drove in Conti for the first run of the inning. Mark McKenna drew a walk, followd by Ryan Creps, which scored Preziuso.
With the bases juiced, Lumley came to the dish once again and singled up the middle scoring Conley, to make it 13-4.
Once again Stekl provided the knockout blow as he came up and drilled a bases-clearing double down the left field line, scoring Lumley, Creps and McKenna to push the score to 16-4. That's how the score remained as the Griffs took the contest 16-4.
Canisius now prepares for a single midweek contest next week as takes on Kent State in Kent, Ohio on Tuesday, before heading off to Fishkill, N.Y. for a MAAC series against Manhattan beginning next Saturday, April 9. The two teams engage in a doubleheader on April 9, with the finale on April 10.
