BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Canisius baseball team suffered its first losses in conference play on Friday, as the squad dropped both games of a doubleheader to Siena, 6-4 and 3-1, at the Demske Sports Complex. With the pair of losses the Griffs' win-streak was snapped at eight games and the squad fell to 11-15 overall and 3-2 in MAAC play. With its wins the Saints improved to 7-17 and 3-2 in conference action.
GAME ONE:
The Blue and Gold spoiled a strong start by Josh Shepley as the squad fell victim to a four-run rally in the eighth inning by the Saints, which sealed the Griffs' fate.
It appeared Canisius had gotten out to a strong start as Adam Tricarico belted a two-run blast over the left field fence, with Canisius staking claim to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. However the Saints whethered the storm and eventually took the lead late in the contest.
Shepley worked five innings and allowed seven hits, but just two earned runs in the no-decision, as he fanned five.
Mike Elwood came on in relief and worked three innings with the final one being the knockout blow for Siena, as the squad rapped out seven hits against Elwood and four earned runs in the trio of innings. Michael Ginther came on and worked a clean ninth inning.
Canisius had a trio of players record two hits, as Ryan Stekl, Tricarico and Nick Capitano all rapped out a pair. Tricarico led the team in RBI, with his two-run homerun doing the damage.
For Siena Tom Miller started the game and worked seven innings and earned the win, as he improved to 1-5. Miller allowed eight hits and three earned runs in the win. Kyano Cummings was credited with the save, as he worked two innings, and yielded two hits and one run and four strikeouts.
GAME TWO:
Runs were at a premium in game two, as a two run outburst by the Saints in the top of the second was good enough to record the victory, as the squad bested Canisius 3-1 in the second game of the twin bill.
Canisius recorded the first run of the game as Liam Wilson drove in Anthony Massicci in the bottom of the first inning, but Siena countered that with a pair in the top of the second, as the squad took a lead it never relinquished.
Alex Godzak got the start in this contest and worked two innings and allowed three hits and walked three, as Siena touched him for two earned runs. Aaron Casper came on after and worked five strong innings where he allowed just three hits and one run (unearned).
Bryan Goosens got the start for Siena and worked five innings, and kept Canisius out of rhythm. He allowed just four hits and one earned run in the winning effort as he improved to 2-2.
Cummings came on in the second-straight contest and recorded the save as he worked two frames, allowed no hits and fanned four.
Canisius will conclude the series with the Saints tomorrow when the squad plays the finale at the Demske Sports Complex around 3 p.m. The two teams will take the field following the Canisius men's lacrosse game, which is slated for 11 a.m.
