Baseball Drops Series Finale Against Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Canisius baseball team dropped the rubber match against Campbell on Sunday, as the Camels defeated the Griffs 12-4 in Buies Cree, N.C. With the loss Canisius fell to 3-8, while Campbell improved to 6-5, this season.

With the game tied 3-3, the Camels offense roughed up the bullpen and the Canisius defense, as the squad , scored seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings combined, lifting the Camels to the 12-4 rout.

J.P. Stevenson got the start for the Blue and Gold and threw five innings and allowed six hits, and five runs with four earned in the outing. The second-year starter also fanned a season-high eight batters in the no-decision.

Tyler Smith came on in the sixth inning and had tough go of it, working just 1.2 innings, allowed five hits and five runs with just one coming as earned. While Smit had his struggles, he was hurt by a pair of errors by his defense that aided the Camels rally.

A trio of member of the Blue and Gold bullpen came on in relief of Smith as Micheal Ginther, Andrew Kneussle and Jared Kennedy combined for 1.2 innings of work and allowed just three this and two runs to cloe out the game.

Campbell relied on just two hurlers as Michael Horrell got the started and work six innings, allowed four runs with three earned on six  hits, and struck out four, improving to 1-1 this season.


Erik Dowse came on and worked three strong innings, allowing just two hits and fanned three in the outing.

Campbell got on the board first as Adam Wyse stole home in the bottom of the second. However the Griffs responded with a two hit, three run rally, with Ryan Stekl and Christ Conley were credited with RBI.

After Campbell knotted things up in the home half of  the frame, Canisius struck again in the top of the sixth, taking a 4-3 lead. However the bottom of the sixth led way to the rally the opened up the game.

A walk and throwing error got two Camels aboard, with a sacrifice bunt bringing in Jimmy Monaghan, for the first run of the rally. Following the run, Smith came on in relief of Stevenson, and the firsrt batter he faced, Drew Butler flied out to center field driving in Zach Minnick for the second run of the frame. Kyle Prats also singled in a run to push the lead to 5-3.

The Camels continued to the streak rally in the seventh, using a two hit four run rally to claim the 12-4 victory.

Canisius now prepares for a four-game set against the Cincinnati Bearcats next weekend. The Griffs will face Cincicnatti for one game on Friday, a doubleheader on Saturday and one game on Sunday to complete the series.
