Box Score MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Canisius baseball team extended its winning streak to seven on Tuesday night, as the squad bested Big 12 member West Virginia in extra innings, 7-5. The Blue and Gold offense managed to to score two runs in the top of the 10th inning and slammed the door shut in the bottom half of the frame, to secure the victory. With the win the Griffs improved to 10-13 while the Mountaineers dropped to 12-9.
After recording two quick outs in the top of the 10th, Canisius' offense put three runners aboard as Jake Lumley walked, Ryan Stekl singled and Liam Wilson earned the free pass. With the bases juiced senior Anthony Massicci and Adam Tricarico bothed worked walks with a 3-2 count to earn the go-ahead runs in the contest.
The Mountaineers attempted to tie the game in the home half of the inning getting baserunners aboard by way a walk and a hit by pitch and a single but Iannick Remillard earned his fifth save of the year as he closed the door and sealed the 7-5 victory.
Andrew Kneussle got the start for Canisius and worked four innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs in the no-decision. Michael Ginther picked up in the fifth and pitched 2.1 innings and allowed three hits and one earned run, before Tyler Smith relieved Ginther and went 2.2 innings and yielded just one hit and fanned one batter, as he improved to 2-1 with the win.
Tricarico had himself a strong day for the Blue and Gold, going 3-of-5 from the dish, including one RBI and a double. Aside from the sophomore outfielder, the freshmen duo of Mark McKenna and Joseph Preziuso chipped in a pair of RBI each as McKenna notched two hits and Preziuso tallied one.
West Virginia took a 1-0 lead early in the game as the Mountaineers scored one run in the bottom of the third inning. However in the top of the fourth the Griffs answered back, pushing three across the dish.
West Virginia and Canisius traded punches before the Blue and Gold ermeged from the fifth inning with a one run lead. It wasn't until the seventh inning did the Mountaineers tie the game and eventually force the extra innings.
With the win, Canisius earns its first win over a Big 12 team under head coach Mike McRae. It is also the first win over West Virginia since the team went 2-2 against the Mountaineers in 2011, however the squad wasn't a part of the Big 12 at the time.
Canisius wraps up the two game stand against West Virginia tomorrow, looking to make it eight-straight victories in Morgantown, West Virginia. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. Following tomorrows contest the Griffs welcome MAAC foe Siena to the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday and Sunday.
