Box Score WILSON, N.C. – Both Anthony Massicci and Jake Lumley each recorded a pair of hits and one RBI, as the Canisius baseball team used five runs in the sixth and seventh innings, to record the 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Fordham on Friday. With the win the Griffs improve to 1-4 while Fordham drops to 1-3.
Aside from the late-Inning heroics, the Canisius pitching staff, one inning aside, turned in a solid performance, allowing just five hits and three earned runs in the victory.
Mike Elwood got the start and pitched effectively, save for a rough third inning in which the Rams recorded three runs. The senior hurler yielded five hits and four runs (three earend) in five innings of work. He also struck out one in the no-decision.
Aaron Casper came on in relief and held the Rams hitless through two frames, and recorded three strikeouts. The fifth-year player improved to 1-0 this season.
Meanwhile, Iannick Remillard recorded his first save of the 2016 season, as he worked a flawless ninth, fanning three batters. The senior closer worked his way one save closer to the all-time program record held by Jon Fitzsimmons (22), recording his 13th career save.
The sixth and seventh innings proved to be the difference maker, as the Griffs offense came alive.
With one out, down 4-0 to the Rams, the Griffs recorded three-straight singles as, Massicci, Liam Wilson and Lumley all recorded base-knocks. With the bases loaded Adam Tricarico worked a walk and brought Massicci home to make it 4-1.
Alex O'Donnell came up a batter later and singled to second base and drove in Wilson. Next John Conti recorded a sac fly to bring in Lumley to cut the deficit to 4-3 before Tim Kensinger came on and struck out to end the rally.
After a scoreless half-inning, the Blue and Gold went back at it as the Griffs once again got baserunners aboard as Christ Conley walked and Ryan Stekl was hit by a pitch. Massicci singled to load the bases before Massicci and Lumley recorded singles to tie and take the lead against Fordham.
That was all she wrote as Casper and Remillard shut down the Fordham offense the rest of the way.
Canisius returns to action on Saturday for a double-header against Fordham beginning at noon in Wilson, N.C. The series concludes on Sunday at 11 a.m.
