Box Score PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The Canisius baseball team opened up the 2016 campaign with a 9-0 loss to No. 15 Michigan on Friday afternoon. The Wolverines posted four-run innings in both the bottom of the first and bottom of the sixth to propel the team to victory. With the loss the Griffs drop to 0-1 to start the season, while Michgian opens up at 1-0.
Starter Mike Elwood settled down after a rough first inning, getting touched for four runs on four hits in the opening frame. The starting hurler settled down and limited Michigan to two hits in the final three innings he threw. Elwood finished the game with four innings pitched, allowing six hits and four earned runs and fanned two.
Zachary Sloan came on in relief and pitched a scoreless inning striking out two, surrendering one hit and holding the Wolverines at bay. Jake Casey followed up and was chased after allowing three hits and three earned runs.
Aaron Casper closed out the game, pitching three innings, surrendering five hits, two earned runs and fanned four batters.
The offense was held in check for most of the game, as Brett Adock started and threw 5.1 scoreless innings and yielded just three hits and struck out seven batters. Jayce Valencia came in and pitched 1.2 innings and held the Griffs to without a hit and Troy Miller came on ad kept things under control, going two scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.
Four different Griffs recorded a hit in the contest as Anthony Massicci, Christ Conley, John Conti and Cyrus Senior all recorded base knocks.
Cody Bruder got the Wolverines on the board with a two-RBI single to left center, sending Matt Ramsay and Jake Bivens home. A Johnny Slater double to left center drove in Drew Lugbauer while batters later, Bruder was driven in by a sac fly by Harrison Wenson.
Michgian posted another four spot in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach before registering another run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Griffs continue the series, playing in a double-header on Saturday, as the squad plays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively. The squad concludes its opening series with Michigan on Sunday at 11 a.m.
