Box Score HAMDEN, Conn. – The Canisius women's basketball team had its losing streak extended to four, with a 63-54 loss to the Quinnipiac on Friday night. The Griffs kept it close through much of the second half but ran out of time, as Canisius dropped to 7-7 overall, and 2-3 in MAAC play, while Quinnipiac improved to 7-7 and 2-3 in conference action.
Lauren D'Hont paced the Blue and Gold squad with 11 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the field, including 1-of-2 from beyond the arc. Canisius also had two other players reach double-figures with Margret Halfdanardottir and Tamara Miskovic scoring 10 apiece.
Crystal Porter and Jasmine Mungo provided the presence in the middle as the duo notched six rebounds apiece, while Halfdanardottir dished out five assists to lead the team.
The Bobcats had two players hit double-figures as Paula Strautmane and Aryn McClure each had 10, while the usual Quinnipiac threat, Maria Napolitano was held in check with just seven points in the contest.
Rebounding, especially down the stretch, proved to be the difference for Quinnipiac, as the Bobcats outrebounded Canisius 42-36. On the offensive side, Quinnipiac posted 13 rebounds and converted that into 12-second chance points for the game.
The Griffs were once again quiet from 3-point land, draining just one trey for the entire game and shooting 1-of-14 for 7.1 percent. The last time the Griffs were held to just one 3-point bucket was also against Quinnipiac on Feb. 9, 2014 when the squad when 1-of-9.
Offense was hard to come by for both teams in the first half, as the Griffs needed a last-second trey by Halfdanardottir to give the squad a slim 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, while Quinnipiac got the best of the Griffs in the second frame, 14-10.
Canisius did end the second quarter on a high note, as the squad all-but erased a six-point deficit, using a 6-2 run to end the stanza down 26-24.
Quinnipiac shot well below 30 percent for the half hitting 8-of-31 from the field, while the Griffs managed to end the half slightly above the 30 percent plateau, shooting 10-of-33 from the field for a 30.3 percent mark.
Quinnipiac raced out to a 34-26 lead in the third frame and appeared to take control of the contest, but the resilient Griffs went on an 11-4 run headed into the media timeout, to make it 38-37, Quinnipiac.
It looked as if Canisius was poised to challenge for the lead but once again the offense went cold for the final few minutes, and Quinnipiac took a slim 40-37 advantage into the final frame.
Canisius once again looked to challenge the lead, opening the fourth frame with a pair of free throw makes by Halfdanardottir to cut the deficit to just one, but that's as close as the Griffs came in the final stanza, jockeying back and forth with the Bobcats until the final whistle, as Quinnipiac prevailed 63-54.
The Griffs look to try to snap the losing skid in New Rochelle, N.Y., as the squad takes on Iona on Sunday afternoon. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
