Box Score 2 Jack Masa helped negate a late-inning collapse as he punched a sigle to right field to drive in Zach Garick and break a ninth-inning tie, as the Griffs forced double-header split against Siena, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. The Saints tallied the first game win, as they edged the Canisius 3-2. With the split the Griffs are now 25-26 overall and 13-7 in MAAC play, while Siena is now 17-25 and 10-7 in conference.
Canisius appeared to be in control in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Griffs held a 3-2 advantage in the final frame. Dan Swain led off the inning, as an error charged to Anthony Massicci led to a free pass and a passed ball allowed him safe passage to second.
a Justin Esquerra single brought Swain home to tie the game, but Remillard came on to stop the bleeding and shut the door on the Siena offense.
In the first game Alex Godzak pitched a strong six innings but suffered the loss, as he allowed five hits and three runs, only one earned to fall to 5-4. Brandon Bielecki came on and threw two scoreless frames as he held the Saints hitless.
Ed Lewicki started the game as he went seven innings, allowed just four hits and two earned runs to improve to 5-4.
In a game that saw just 11 hits between the two teams, both Jesse Puscheck and Massa led the squad with a pair apiece. Massa had the only Canisius RBI off a two-run double.
Seina scratched out five hits as five different players recorded at least one hit, and Dan Lowndes recorded the only RBI.
Siena got the first lead of the game as Lowndes drove in Brian Fay to give the Saints an early 1-0 in the bottom of the second.
The Griffs took the lead in the top of the fourth however, as Puscheck got the inning started with a single and Ryan Stekl walked to put baserunners on with one out. Massa did the rest as he rapped a double to right center to score the only runs of the game for the Blue and Gold.
Esquera grounded into a double play but brought home Swain to tie things up in the bottom of the sixth, and the Saints took a lead they didn't relinquish in the bottom of the seventh, as Dave Hoffman scored on a wild pitch to help secure the victory.
In the second game the Griffs went with a pitcher by committee approach as Devon Stewart threw for just one inning and allowed two hits and two earned runs in the abbreviated outing. Zachary Sloan came on in relief and pitched three innings and allowed two hits and no runs. Tyler Smith followed and worked 2.1 innings and allowed two hits and one run in the outing. Eric Stolzenburg relieved Smith and threw 0.1 inning before, Remillard entered the game and worked the rest of the way, as he allowed one hit and no runs as he improved to 1-4.
Bryan Goossens started the game for Siena and made it through four innings and allowed three hits and three runs, all earned as he didn't factor into the decision. Ryan Bellomo was saddled with the loss after he threw 2.2 innings and allowed two hits and one earned run, and struck out four.
Runs were hard to come by for the second-straight game as neither team was able to get much going early.
Siena notched the early 2-0 lead thanks to a Esquerra double to right center which drove in Swain and Fay
Canisius answered in the fifth, as a balk by Kyano Cummings brought in Brett Siddall, and Connor Panas stayed hot at the dish as he drove in a pair on a single to end the inning up 3-2.
The Saint's final inning heroics pushed across a tying run, but Massa's RBI up the middle in the ninth helped give the Griffs a lead it never relinquished.
Canisius will attempt to take the series in the rubber match tomorrow at 4 p.m. That will be the final road series for the Griffs, as the squad will have one final MAAC series at home beginning next Thursday.
