A number of hockey student-athletes were honored recently at the school's annual Petey Awards, a ceremony that recognizes players from each team at Canisius.
Senior Keegan Asmundson collected Male Record Breaking Performance of the Year honors for his outstanding 2014-15 campaign. A second-team All-Atlantic Hockey selection, Asmundson set the program's marks with a 1.96 goals against average and .930 save percentage during the season, ranking seventh and ninth nationally, respectively. The senior also finished his tenure with the Blue and Gold with school records in career goals against average (2.08) and career save percentage (.930).
Freshman Ryan Schmelzer earned the school's Male Rookie of the Year accolades. Schmezler led all Canisius freshmen with 14 points, five goals and nine assists this season, while his plus/minus rating of +15 was the program's highest mark since the Griffs joined Atlantic Hockey in 2003.
Two Griffs were also recognized for their work off the ice in seniors Doug Jessey and Braeden Rigney.
Jessey received the Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award, which is presented to student-athletes who excel in academics, community service, team spirit and competition.
Rigney earned the Cannon Leadership Award for the fall semester. The award is presented annually to student-athletes that display good leadership skills, take initiative in community service and exemplify the “student” in student-athlete.
In addition, junior Mathew Backhouse was also recognized as the school's Male Iron Griff of the Year.
The hockey team, which was also recognized as the Dr. Daniel P. Starr Outstanding Athletic Team of the Year in late April, ended the 2014-15 season with an 18-12-7 record and matched the program's best Atlantic Hockey finish with a two seed for the conference tournament.
