Box Score 2 Senior Connor Panas made sure that he stole the show in Canisius Baseball's Saturday doubleheader against Marist, as he drilled a walk-off homerun over the center field wall to help lift the Griffs to an exhilarating 4-2 win at the Demske Sports Complex. The game one win helped propel Canisius to a two-game sweep of the Red Foxes with the third game to be played on Sunday. At the end of the day the Griffs improved to 23-25 overall and 11-6 in MAAC play, while Marist dropped to 14-22-1 and 8-9 in conference.
In the first game, a contest-tying run in the bottom of the eighth knotted things up and Panas' late inning heorics got Canisius off to a strong start in the series.
Alex Godzak pitched effectively for the Griffs as he went six innings and allowed just five hits and two earned runs as he got the no-decision. Out of the bullpen came Brandon Bielecki who had a strong outing himself, as he improved to 3-2 this season. Bielecki pitched three innings, allowed just three hits and fanned three in the victrory.
Chris Napolitano pitched strong as well as he scattered four hits and one earned run in seven innings of work. Tyler Dearden came on and recorded the loss as he pitched 1.2 innings and allowed four hits and three runs in the loss.
Panas was one of two players to notch two hits the game as Brett Siddall recorded a pair. Panas, Siddall and Lumley all recorded one RBI apiece.
Steve Laurino and Matt Pagano did the damage for Marist, as the duo each had an RBI and four hits each.
The Red Foxes got on the board first as Graham McIntire led off with a single and Steve Laurino smacked a triple to center field to take a 1-0 lead. Pagano then singled to center to bring Laurino in, as the Marist staked claim to a 2-0 lead in top of the fourth.
Panas helped Bring the Griffs closer as he tripled in the fifth inning and was later driven in by Lumley to make it 2-1.
In the bottom of the eighth Siddall made it 2-2 as he drove in Jesse Puscheck with an RBI single up the middle, which set the stage for Panas' game-winning homerun in the bottom of the ninth.
In game two Canisius used a four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to help secure a 5-1 win in the doubleheader finale.
Devon Stewart pitched the full seven innings, allowing just six hits and one earned run and struck out two, as he improved to 5-6.
Evan Davis worked 4.1 innings and got into trouble in the fifth, as he allowed seven hits, five earned runs and seven walks, and fell to 3-7 on the year. Erik Bauer came on and worked 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit to close out the loss.
Panas once again led the team with three hits and three RBI, while Stekl had two hits in the contest. Both Zach Garick and Nick Capitano earned RBI walks as part of the fifth-run rally to aid the offense.
Marist got on the board first in the top of the second as Matt Belitz singled to center field to drive in Mark Swertfager.
Canisius answered in the home half of the inning, as Panas drove in Garick on a fielder's choice RBI.
With game knotted at 1-1, Davis unraveled in the bottom of the fifth.
Stekl led off with a leadoff single up the middle and Davis followed it up with a walk to put runners at first and second. John Conti came on to pinch run for Stekl before Davis walked Anthony Massicci to load the bases. Davis walked the next two batters as Garick and Capitano earned walks to take the lead. Panas did the rest as he singled to right field and brought in two RBI's to secure the 5-1 win.
The series finale is slated for tomorrow afternoon as the Griffs play Marist at the Demske Sports Complex following the MAAC women's lacrosse championship, with an approximate first-pitch time of 3:30.
