Baseball Cruises to 13-0 Win On Senior Day

Box Score

The Canisius College Baseball team cruised to a 13-0 win over rival Niagara on Friday afternoon as the Golden Griffins wrapped up the regular season and celebrated Senior Day at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs pounded out 15 hits en route to clinching the second-seed in next week's MAAC Baseball Championship. With the win, Canisius improved to 29-27 overall and 16-8 in conference play, while the Purple Eagles ended their season with a 13-32-2 overall mark and 8-16 record in MAAC action.

Senior pitcher Brandon Bielecki got Canisius off to a good start in his final appearance on the hill at the Demske Sports Complex. The Amherst N.Y. native picked up his fourth win of the season after he allowed one hit and fanned four in 3.2 innings of work.

Bielecki got all the run support he would need for his teammates, as the Blue and Gold pushed five runs across in the first to allow Canisius to jump out an early 5-0 lead after one inning of play.

In the bottom of the first inning, freshman Ryan Stekl singled through the right side of the infield with the bases loaded to drive in a pair of runs. Junior Brett Siddall with an RBI-single through the right side to push senior teammate Jesse Pusheck across the plate. Junior Anthony Massicci and freshman Zach Garick also had RBI in the frame to help the Griffs' cause.

Siddall ended the day with five RBI to lead the Blue and Gold, while seven different players were credited with at least one run batted in during the contest. Sophomore Jake Lumley and Siddall each had three hits in the win for the Griffs, with Siddall adding two doubles in the victory to dive his season total to 19 two-base hits on the year.

The Canisius pitching staff stayed locked in throughout the contest, as the final five pitchers of freshman Tyler Smith, senior Eric Stolzenburg, junior Iannick Remillard and senior Tyler Vavra combined for 3.2 innings of work and held Niagara hitless. Sophomore hurler Zachary Sloan relieved Bieleicki and yielded just two hits in 1.2 innings of work on the hill.

Prior to Friday's game, the the baseball program honored the careers of its seven seniors who were playing in their final game at the Demske Sports Complex. Bielecki, Mike Krische, Connor Panas, Jesse Puscheck, Devon Stewart, Stolzenburg and Vavra had their careers celebrated prior to first pitch.

With the win, Canisius earned a first-round bye and will begin the tournament on Thursday, May 21 when it plays the higher seeded of the two winners from the first two games. The Griffs kick off Thursday's contests at noon at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y. All games being streamed through MAAC.tv.
