Siena Edges Baseball in Soggy Series Finale

Box Score

The Canisius College baseball team wasn't just battling the Siena Saints on Sunday afternoon, but the squad was also battling Mother Nature. The Griffs slogged through two rain delays, totaling one hour and 38 minutes, and fell 4-1 in a shortened contest due to darkness.  With the loss the Griffs drop its final road MAAC series of the year, 2-1, and fall to 25-27 overall and 13-8 in the MAAC. With the win, Siena improved to 18-25 overall and to 11-7 in conference. With Canisus' win on Saturday and Siena's win today, both teams secured a place in the MAAC Championship tournament coming up May 20-23.

The Canisius bats weren't quite as quiet as they were on Saturday as the squad belted out seven hits in the contest, but Canisius managed just one run in the course of the 8.1 inning-long contest.

Zach Garick's RBI in the top of the eighth  was the only one tallied by the team as the first-year man's two hits was tied with fellow freshman, Jack Massa for team lead in the game.

While Siena rapped out one more hit than the Griffs the squad managed to make those hits count with three more RBI. Justin Esquerra, Alex Tuccio and Dan Lowndes all recorded an RBI.

J.P. Stevenson had his start cut short thanks to a rain delay as he worked 2.0 innings, allowed two hits and no runs and fanned four. Aaron Casper worked 1.1 innings and held the saints scoreless as Josh Shepley finished the inning working 0.2 innings and kept Siena in check.

The Griffs ran into trouble in the final 2.1 innings as Eric Stolzenburg and Brandon Bielecki allowed six hits and four runs with two earned as Stolzenburg was handed the loss.

Chris Amarosi worked 6.1 innings and allowed five hits and no runs as he improved to 3-2.

With the score 2-0 in favor of the Saints, Garick helped bring the Griffs back to within one with with a RBI double to center field to drive in Anthony Massicci. Following the Garick double, Jesse Puscheck walked and put runners at first and second with two outs but Stekl recorded the final out of the inning with a foul out to right field to stop the Canisius rally.

The Saints used two errors to help notch a pair of runs in the bottom of the as Lowndes scored on an error and Esquerra tallied an RBI single before time was called due to darkness at the field.

The Griffs will now enter the final week of its regular season schedule, as the squad will face Akron in a mid-week contest on the road on Tuesday. Canisius will then host Niagara on Thursday and Friday as the squad will play its final home series before heading to the MAAC championship.
