Box Score The Canisius College baseball team managed seven hits in the game, but was unable to convert the hits into runs, as the Youngstown State Penguins defeated the Griffs, 4-1 in a mid-week contest at Eastwood Field. With the loss Canisius drops to 14-18, while the Penguins improve to 8-17.
A Conor Panas sacrifice fly in the top of the third knotted the game up at 1-1 but three runs in the bottom of the fifth was all Youngstown State needed to secure the victory.
Aaron Casper got the start for the Griffs as he went 2.1 innings and allowed just three hits, no runs and one strikeout. Zachary Sloan took the loss in the game as he came on in relief and pitched 2.1 innings, and yielded three hits and three runs, two earned, along with two strikeouts. Brandon Bielecki replaced Sloan, and finished the game, going 3.1 innings and allowed just one hit and fanned two.
Joe King got the win as he started the contest and pitched 4.0 innings, allowed four hits and one earned run to go along with three strikeouts.
Panas' RBI was the lone run of the game for the Griffs, while Ryan Stekl recorded a pair of hits to lead the squad.
Alex Core, Brent Gillespie and Alex Larivee recorded RBI for the Penguins ad Jason Shirley led the way with two hits.
The Griffs now head home for a Wednesday contest against Binghamton. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
