Box Score The Canisius College baseball team rebounded from a 7-4 loss at the hands of the Patriots yesterday, as pitcher Devon Stewart and outfielder Brett Siddall contributed to an 8-2 win in Fairfax, Va., Saturday. With the win the Griffs inched closer to a .500 winning percentage, improving to 18-21 overall and George Mason dropped to 15-20-1. This is the first time in the series history that Canisius had bested the Patriots.
The Griffs combined timely hitting and strong pitching to record the victory, as Stewart tossed a strong 7.1 innings, and allowed just six hits and two earned runs, as he improved to 4-5. Siddall led the hitting as he went an efficient 3-for-4 along with a pair of RBI to spark the offense.
Eric Stolzenburg and Brandon Bielecki finished up the game for the Canisius starter, as Stolzenburg allowed a hit and Bielecki finished the game out, as he pitched 1.2 innings and fanned one.
John Wiliams got the start for George Mason and worked 6.1 innings, allowed eight hits, and five runs, two of which were earned, as he took the loss. The trio of Evan Porcella, Taylor Hunt and Saul Aguilera combined for 2.2 innings and yielded two hits and three runs.
The Griffs got the first lead of the game in the top of the fourth as Nick Capitano drove in a pair, thanks to a single to right field. The first-year catcher was thrown out at second but still got Canisius on the board.
George Mason got one back in the bottom of the fifth, but Siddall started the top of the sixth with a bang, as he launched a homer run to right center to make it 3-1.
The Griffs recorded runs in the next three innings, as Jake Lumley, Connor Panas, and Siddall recorded RBI to help close out the victory.
The Griffs and and Patriots will play the rubber game tomorrow as the two squads will begin at 1 p.m.
