Box Score The Canisius College baseball team exploded for 21 hits in a 23-0 rout of Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon, in Jersey City, N.J. The Griffs won its third MAAC series this season and improved to 16-20 and 8-4 in conference play. The Peacocks drop to 4-20 and 3-6 in MAAC play.
In the first day of the series, the Griffs bounced back from a first-game loss to the Peacocks with an 8-3 victory in the afternoon finale. Canisius continued that momentum on the second day, leaving little doubt from the first inning. In the final two games of the series the Griffs out hit Saint Peter's 31-12 and outscored their foes, 31-3.
A trio of Griffs combined for 15 RBI, as Jake Lumley led the squad with seven, while Brett Siddal and Jesse Puscheck both had four apiece. Lumley was also part of a trio that led the team in hits as he, Anthony Massicci and Puscheck all had four.
Both Lumley and Siddall were also a specific hit away from the cycle for the day, as Lumley lacked the triple and Puscheck lacked the homerun. Puscheck nearly notched the feat in the second inning as he launched a hit that bounced off the top of the fence and stayed in the park, which resulted in a loud double.
J.P. Stevenson went eight strong innings and yielded just four hits and struck out six to improve to 4-2. Tyler Vavra came on to finish out the ninth and allowed just one hit in the inning.
For Saint Peter's Kevin Soriano struggled out of the gate, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing five hits and seven earned runs before he got pulled. Jason Midkiff came on and struggled just as much as he went 1.1 innings and walked three. Five other pitchers entered the game for the Peacocks and combined for 6.1 innings, allowed 16 hits, 16 runs, 10 earned.
Puscheck got the attack started with an RBI single in the top of the first. Siddall followed that up with a three-run homerun to cap the inning with a 4-0 lead.
Griffs followed that up with three runs in the second thanks to a Puscheck RBI double, while sacrifice fly's Ryan Stekl and Siddall led to two more runs to make it 7-0.
With the score 9-0, the Griffs exploded with 13 runs in the top of the seventh and eighth innings.
The Griffs managed six hits for seven runs in the seventh and four hits and six runs in the eighth.
Canisius added one more in the night to complete the 23-0 rout.
