Baseball Splits with Saint Peter?s on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Canisius College baseball team bounced back from a series-opening loss to Saint Peter's on Saturday afternoon, as the squad finished the day with an 8-3 win over the Peacocks, in Jersey City, N.J. The Griffs dropped the first game on Saturday, 6-4, before knotting the series up at 1-1 in the second game. With Saturday's results, Canisius is now 15-20 overall and 7-4 in conference play, while Saint Peter's finishes Saturday with a 4-20-1 and 3-5 in MAAC play.

In the first game the Griffs started off with a bang as Brett Siddall singled through the right side of the infield and Connor Panas belted a two run homerun to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

However a disastrous bottom of the fourth and fifth led to the Griffs' downfall as the Peacocks' Vinny Mietta drove in a pair with a double in the bottom of the fourth, and Mike Ionta's pair of RBI off a double helped spark Saint Peter's to the victory.

While Peacocks received some timely hitting, four errors by the Griffs helped put the home squad in prime position and ultimately proved to be the difference.

Alex Godzak got things started in the series as he pitched five innings and allowed five hits and six runs, but none earned, in the game. He also fanned six in the loss as he dropped to 4-2. John Leiter got the start and went 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. Mike Doran picked up the win in the game as he came on in relief and threw 2.1 innings, allowed two hits and one earned run to improve to 1-4.

In the second game of the double header, the Griffs overcame a slow start rather quickly, erasing a 2-0 first inning deficit in the top of the second inning, and taking the lead in the top of the third. Canisius' staff then limited the Peacocks to just one run the rest of the way to record the 8-3 win.

Down 2-0, Anthony Massicci singled up the middle as he drove in a run, while John Conti stole home to knot the game up at 2-2. A Ryan Stekl RBI single to center field gave the Griffs the first lead of the game, while Siddall drove in a run on a single up the middlet to make it 4-2.

The Griffs added four more down the stretch as Adam Tricarico, Massicci each recorded an RBI in the top of the fifth, while Alex O'Donnell smacked a homerun in the top of the seventh to cap the scoring.

Devon Stewart went seven strong innings, yielded seven hits and three runs with two earned, and struck out four to improve to 3-5 with the win. Mark Wilson got the start for Saint Peter's and worked 4.1 innings and allowed eight hits and six earned runs to record the loss. Wilson dropped to 0-2 on the year.

The Griffs will be back in action tomorrow afternoon to play the rubber game between these two squads. First pitche is slated for 12 p.m.
