Box Score After staking claim to a 3-0 lead, the Canisius College baseball team's bullpen held together for the final three innings to defeat Akron, 3-2 at the Demske Sports Complex on Wednesday, afternoon. The win improved the Golden Griffins to 13-15 while the Zips dropped to 12-14.
Following a rocky top-of-the sixth inning, the Canisius bullpen buckled down as the trio of Eric Stolzenburg, Josh Shepley and Iannick Remillard combined for 3.1 scoreless innings allowing just one hit and recorded two strikeouts. Remillard notched his fifth save of the year.
Aaron Casper started the game and tossed three innings and allowed just one hit and one walk to go along with four strikeouts. Zachary Sloan also saw action as he pitched two innings and yielded just one hit and recorded two strikeouts. Mike Elwood got into trouble in the top of the sixth as he surrendered three hits and two earned runs as the Zips threatened but that's as close as they came.
The offense came alive in the bottom of the second as Jesse Puscheck led off the inning with a single and made it to second base on a throwing error. Ryan Stekl drove him home with a triple to right field, as he got Canisius on the board. Brett Siddall made it a two run lead the very next batter as he singled up the middle to make it 2-0.
The Griffs' advantage increaqsed to, 3-0 an inning later when Puscheck singled up the middle and brought Connor Panas around to score.
A Kevin Simonton RBI double and Brian Lees RBI single were the only runs to cross the plate for Akron.
The Griffs now settle in for its second MAAC home series when the squad welcomes Rider to the Demske Sports Complex on Friday and Saturday. Friday is slated for a single game beginning at 3 p.m., while Saturday will feature a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
