Canisius Baseball Bested In Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Looking to avenge a series-opening loss to James Madison on Saturday, the Canisius baseball team dropped a pair of games against the Dukes on Saturday, as the Golden Griffins were edged in the first game, 5-4, and bested in the second, 10-8. The pair of losses extended the Griffs' losing to streak to five, as the squad ends the day at 5-8 overall.

In the first contest, the Griffs squandered a productive second inning where the team scored three runs, as three of the team's four hits came during that rally. Junior Anthony Massicci belted a double which drove in two runs to spur the offense.

The Canisius lead lasted until the fifth inning, when a two-run half-inning knotted the score at 3-3. The Griffs retook the lead in the top of the seventh, as freshman Ryan Stekl Blasted a home run to right field to make it 4-3.

The Dukes answered back in the bottom of the inning as James Madison used a pair of singles to plate one run, to tie the game. The Dukes then led off the eighth with a triple to center, followed by a single by Adam Sisk, which brought in the game-winning run.

Freshman hurler, J.P. Stevenson threw 4.1 innings as he gave up five hits and three runs, two of which were earned. Junior Iannick Remillard came on in relief and threw three innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs along with two strikeouts.

Michael Evans came on and got a crucial out as he recorded the win for James Madison, while Derek Shifflett, pitched the majority of the game, throwing for 5.1 innings as he allowed three hits, three runs as and fanned four.

The second game of the day saw 18 runs scored between the two teams, as offense was on full-display. Seven different Griffs tallied RBIs as the squad notched 10 hits during the game.

It appeared the Griffs had the game well in hand, maintaining an 8-3 lead as the game wore on, however a disastrous bottom of the sixth inning helped turn things around for James Madison. The Dukes plated seven runs to take the lead, with Evan Hanifee doing most of the damage as he hit a grand slam to put the game out of reach for the Blue and Gold.

Junior Alex Godzak started the game and pitched three innings as he allowed six hits, three earned runs and struck out two. Redshirt junior Mike Elwood was saddled with the loss thanks to the sixth inning collapse. Elwood finished the game having pitched three innings and allowed seven hits and seven earned runs.

Tucker McCoy earned the win as he came on in relief and threw 1.2 innings of work as he allowed just one hit and recorded one strike out.

Canisius will attempt to salvage the trip as they have one more game against James Madison on Monday afternoon before the squad comes home to open up against UB on Wednesday. Tomorrow's game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
