Box Score 2 Jake Lumley provided the highlight of the afternoon as he hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Canisius College baseball team split a doubleheader with Fairfield on Sunday afternoon. The Griffs won the first game, thanks to the final inning heroics, 5-4, while the Stags got the better of the action in the second, winning 9-3. After the twin bill, Canisius is 11-15 and 4-1 in MAAC play while Fairfield is 4-12 and 2-3 in conference action.
GAME ONE:
Lumley brought the Griffs back from the brink of defeat as he launched a homerun over the fence in rightcenter to give the Griffs a 5-4, walk off win. Lumley recorded his hit with two outs in the inning.
It appeared Fairfield adverted collapse in the bottom of the eighth after Canisius drew to within one, but starting hurler, Mike Wallace worked his way out of a jam to take a one-run advantage to the ninth.
Canisius led off the final frame with a triple from Anthony Massicci but ran into trouble when reliever, Andrew Gallagher, forced a ground out from Ryan Stekl and struck out pinch-hitter, Tyler Smith. With Canisius down to its final batter, Fairfield skipper, Bill Currier, called in Mike Bonauito to record the final out. Lumley lifted the Griffs to victory four pitches later as he drove in two runs on the longball.
Lumley's pair of RBI led the team with Mike Krische, and Brett Siddall also recording RBI.
For Fairfield, Michael Conti drove in a pair of RBI to spark the offense.
Devon Stewart got the start for the Griffs as he went seven innings and allowed five hits and four runs, three earned, and fanned four in the no-deciscion. Zachary Sloan came on and pitched two scoreless frames and recorded the win as he improved to 2-0.
Mike Wallace got the start for Fairfield as he went eight innings and allowed six hits, three earned runs and notched eight strikeouts. Bonaiuto recorded the loss in the inning.
GAME TWO:
A disastrous sixth inning spoiled what was a strong start by J.P. Stevenson, as the freshman hurler came apart and allowed four hits and six earned runs, as Fairfield defeated the Griffs 9-3 at the Demske Sports complex.
It appeared the Griffs were in control as the squad cruised through the first five frame and held a 3-1 lead to that point.
Fairfiled had the last laugh as it scored eight runs in the final two innings to secure the win.
Iannaic Remilard pitched one inning and allowed one unearned run along with strikeout and Brandon Beilecki threw an inning of work and allowed three hits and two earned runs to go along with one strikeout.
Aaron Howell threw for Fairfield and pitched six innings, yielded six hits and three runs, while EJ Ashworth got an inning of work in and pitched one scoreless frame and recorded two strikeouts.
A four RBI day for Sebastian Salvo, led the Stags to victory while Troy Scocca also chipped in a pair.
Alex O'Donnell and Jesse Puscheck recorded RBI for the Griffs, while O'Donnell's three hit affair led the club.
The Griffs will finish the series on Monday afternoon as the squad hosts the Stags at the Demske Sports Complex. First pitch is to be announced.
