Buffalo Outlasts Griffs Baseball In Extra Innings

Box Score

The University at Buffalo baseball team spoiled Canisius College's first game back from an eight-game road swing, as the Bulls outlasted the Griffs, 8-5, in 11 innings on Tuesday night. Buffalo scored three 11th inning runs to improve to 5-12, while the Griffs drop to 10-14.

The Bulls managed to seal the game thanks in large part to defensive lapses, as a passed ball and an error led to three unearned runs that ended up being the difference.

Relief pitcher Iannick Remillard pitched himself into trouble as Charlie Sobieraski led off the inning with a single. Following a hit batter and a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, Buffalo took advantage of a wild pitch as Sobieraski scored. A fielding error shortly after allowed two more runs to score as Buffalo staked an 8-5 advantage.

The Griffs managed nine hits during the 11 inning marathon with Connor Panas leading the team with two. Starting shortstop Alex O'Donnell paced the team with two RBI and four different Canisius players had one, apiece.

For Buffalo, leadoff man, Nick Sinay did most of the damage as he went 3-for-5 with an RBi and two runs scored. Sinay, Tanner Robinson, and Bobby Sheppard all recorded one RBI each.

Starting pitcher, Josh Shepley got the start for Canisius and threw for three innings, allowing just one hit but yielding two earned runs. Coming on in relief of Shepley was Tyler Smith, who pitched strong for three innings allowing no hits and recording four strikeouts.

A patchwork staff of Zachary Sloan, Mike Elwood, and Aaron Casper combined for 1.1 inning of work as Casper allowed two hits and two earned runs.

Remillard took the loss in the outing as he went three innings, allowed five hits and four runs with one earned along with for strikeouts. Eric Stolzenburg finished out the game and pitched two thirds of an inning and struck out two.

Canisius got the jump in the game as the squad scored two runs in the bottom of the second thanks to runs by Ryan Stekl and O'Donnell. Buffalo came back in the top of the third as Sinay recorded an RBI single and Robinson drove in Justin Gonzalez on a sacrifice fly, to make it 2-2.

Following a two run bottom of the fourth for the Griffs, the Bulls took their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth. Sheppard singled home Sinay, while a wild pitch and a throwing error allowed two more runs to score as Buffalo led 5-4.

The Griffs got one back in the bottom of the eighth, as the squad got to Buffalo pitcher Tom Taplin early. Mike Krische, Panas and Puscheck all tallied base-hits with the last one driving in a run, to tie the score. However Buffalo pitcher Mike Kaelin stopped the bleeding as he struck out two to keep things tied.

Buffalo's big 11th inning was all that was needed in the final frame, as Canisius was unable to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, to fall 8-5.

The Griffs now get ready for their first MAAC home series as Fairfield comes to town for a three-game set. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, with the first game starting at 2 p.m. The finale is slated for noon on Sunday.
