Canisius baseball completed the three-game sweep of Iona on Monday afternoon, as the Griffs used four runs in the top of the sixth to notch a 7-1 victory at City Park in New Rochelle, N.Y. The win was Canisius' third-straight and improved it's overall record to 10-13 and its conference mark to 3-0. Iona fell to 3-19 and 0-3 in MAAC play.
With the game knotted at 1-1, the Canisius offense cranked out five hits and scored four runs to take a decisive advantage.
Alex Godzak was the third consecutive Griffs pitcher to hold Iona to under five hits in the game, as he pitched seven strong frames and improved to 3-1 this season. Godzak allowed just four hits and one earned run to go along with six strikeouts.
Eddie Macaluso started off strong but came unhinged in the top of the six as he allowed eight hits, and four earned runs in six innings of work to fall to 0-6.
Canisius pounded out 11 hits, as eight different Griffs recorded hits. Brett Siddall led the way with two RBI as he went 2-of-5 for the day. Mike Krische, Jesse Puscheck, Siddall and Anthony Massicci all had a pair of hits, apiece.
For the fifth-straight contest the Griffs scored a run in the top of the first inning, as Lumley led off the game with a triple and a batter later, Connor Panas drove him in with a sacrifice fly to give the Griffs a 1-0 lead.
A leadoff triple also led to the only Iona run of the game, as Jimmy Guiliano got the inning started with a bang, as he belted a triple. Godzak nearly worked out of it, striking out the next batter, but Matt Byrne flied out to center field as Guiliano scored to tie things up.
The Griffs put the game out of reach in the bottom of the six as Krische got things started with a leadoff double. Panas then singled as Krische moved to third. Puscheck drove in a run with a single to right field to retake the lead. The Blue and Gold tallied three more runs on two hits to push four across in the inning.
Canisius added a run in the top of the eighth and ninth for to seal the victory.
Eric Stolzenburg and Brandon Bielecki combined for two innings of work as the duo allow just two hits between the two of them and struck out four.
The Blue and Gold will now settle in for an extended homestand, beginning with a mid-week game against Buffalo tomorrow and its first home MAAC series on Saturday and Sunday, against Fairfield. Saturday will feature a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., while Sunday's game will start at noon.
