Penn State Bests Baseball, 11-1

Penn State starting pitcher, Geoff Boylston limited Canisius to just five hits and one run, in six innings of work, as the Nittany Lions defeated Canisius baseball, 11-1, in State College, Pa., Wednesday evening. The Griffs fell to 7-13 with the loss while Penn State improved to 3-13.

The Blue and Gold started off strong as it recorded a run in the top of the first but Penn State answered quickly, recording four runs and knocking out Canisius starter, Tyler Vavra, having only recorded just one out in the bottom of the first. Penn State never looked back following the first frame.  

Ryky Smith led the way for Penn State as he recorded four of the team's nine RBIs and went 3-of-4. Greg Guers also sparked the lineup as he tallied three hits for the Nittany Lions.

For Canisius Jesse Puscheck recorded the team's lone RBI as he went 1-for-4 on the day. Connor Panas led the team with two hits as he went 2-for-4 during the contest.

The Griffs went with a pitching staff by committee as Zachary Sloan, Mike Elwood, and Shawn Holman finished the game. Sloan and Ellwod pitched three innings apiece and Holman came on and pitched the final inning. The trio surrendered nine hits and four earned runs, while fanning six.

Canisius, which came off a game against Rutgers when it recorded five errors, was hurt again by sloppy play, committed two against Penn State.

In the top of the first the Griffs drew first blood as Panas doubled and Puscheck drove him off a double to right field a batter later. 

Penn State answered right back as the squad recorded four runs on five hits. The squad struck again in the top of the fifth as it pushed across another three runs on three hits against Elwood in the bottom of the fifth. Two, two run innings in the seventh and eighth capped the scoring for Penn State as the squad won, 11-1.

The Griffs now head to New Rochelle, N.Y. as the squad opens up conference play at Iona. The Griffs will play a single game on Friday and a double-header on Saturday. Friday's game begins at noon while Saturday's twin bill will start at noon and 2:30.
