Baseball Takes Two of Three From App State

Box Score Canisius sophomore Jake Lumley went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI and junior pitcher Alex Godzak gave up three hits and fanned five in five innings of work as the Golden Griffins defeated Appalachian State 10-3 in the final game of a three-game set Sunday in Lexington, S.C. The win improves Canisius to 4-3 on the year while the Mountaineers dropped to 2-3 in 2015.

Canisius scored nine runs from the second inning through the top-half of the fourth and that served as more than enough support for Godzak, who picked up his second win of the season in the victory after he threw five-scoreless frames. As a team, Canisius banged out 11 hits in the win, with four players have multi-hit games, led by Lumley. Senior Connor Panas went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, junior Anthony Massicci went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI and fellow junior Brett Siddall went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two runs driven in. Freshman catcher Jack Massa scored a run and knocked in a run while reaching base twice after getting hit-by-pitch.

The Griffs chased Appalachian State starter Dallas DeVrieze after he faced 14 batters through two innings. DeVrieze moved to 1-1 on the year after he allowed seven runs, just two earned, on seven hits while striking out two.

Canisius will return to action Feb. 27, when the Blue and Gold opens a three-game road series at Kentucky. Game time in Lexington, Ky., on Feb. 27 is set for 4 p.m.
