Baseball Splits a Twinbill with Appalachian State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Senior pitcher Eric Stolzenburg earned his win of the season in relief and junior Iannick Remillard posted his second save of the 2015 season as the Canisius Golden Griffins defeated Appalachian State 4-3 in the nightcap of a non-league doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Lexington, S.C. The Mountaineers posted an 8-4 win in the first game. Canisius is now 3-3 on the year while the Mountaineers moved to 2-2 with the split on Saturday.

Stolzenburg came on in relief of redshirt-junior Mike Elwood, who allowed two runs on five hits while striking out two and walking two in four innings in his first career start as a Griff. Stolzenburg threw 1.1 innings of scoreless ball and allowed just one hit to earn the victory.

Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the top-half of the first on a sacrifice-fly by senior Jesse Puscheck and the Blue and Gold took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when senior Connor Panas singled through the right side of the infield to allow junior Anthony Massicci to score from third. After Appalachian State knotted the game at 2-2 in the fourth, Canisius took the lead for good in the fifth after a sacrifice-fly by sophomore Jake Lumley and an RBI-groundout by Puscheck.

The Mountaineers scored a single-run in the sixth to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Griffs, but the Canisius staff shut the door on Appalachian State offense, capped by Remillard, who earned his second save of the year after he allowed just one hit and a walk while fanning three in two innings of work. Canisius had four hits in the win, with Puscheck driving in two runs and Massicci scoring three times.

In the first game, Canisius led 3-2 in the fifth before Appalachian State scored twice in the home-half fifth to take a 4-3 lead. The Mountaineers added four in the eighth inning for insurance. Canisius had seven hits in the loss, led by Puscheck, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and freshman Ryan Stekl, who also went 2-for-4 with a walk. Panas went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as well for the Blue and Gold. Senior Devon Stewart took the loss for the Griffs after he gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits to go with six strikeouts in five innings of work. Appalachian State pitcher Ryan Ross picked up his first win of the season after he pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

The Griffs and the Mountaineers will play the rubber-game of the series on Sunday, with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
