Coastal Carolina Overpowers Baseball, 13-3

Box Score Host Coastal Carolina used the power of a five-run sixth inning to beat Canisius 13-3 in non-conference baseball action Monday afternoon in Conway, S.C. The win improves the Chanticleers to 2-1 on the season while the Golden Griffins slipped to 1-2 in 2015.

Coastal jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Griffs battled back to make the score 4-3 after 2.5 innings of play. In Canisius' half of the third, senior Jesse Puscheck drove in a run with an RBI-single to make the score 4-1, and the Griffs added two more runs on the board moments later when sophomore Jake Lumley singled through the left side to knock in a pair. The game remained a one-run affair until the fifth when Coastal scored twice, and then the Chanticleers opened things up with five runs in the sixth to take an 11-3 lead after six-full frames.

Canisius had seven hits in the loss, with Puscheck and freshman Ryan Stekl each having two base-knocks on the day. Junior Anthony Massicci went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the loss and senior Mike Krische scored a run as well for the Blue and Gold.

Sophomore Josh Shepley took the loss on the hill for Canisius after he allowed four runs on five hits while walking two and striking out one in 4.0 innings. Coastal Carolina reliever Austin Kerr earned the win after he threw 3.2 innings of scoreless, hitless ball while fanning seven.

Canisius and Coastal Carolina will close out the 2015 Caravelle Resort Tournament in Conway, S.C., on Tuesday with a single game. First pitch has been moved to 3 p.m.
