Griffs Fall to First Place Quinnipiac in OT

Despite shooting just under 60 percent from the field (59.6%) the Canisius women's basketball team fell to the MAAC leading Quinnipiac Bobcats in overtime on Sunday afternoon, 88-85. Canisius was led by hot-handed senior Kayla Hoohuli who had 24 points on 9-14 shooting and shot 60 percent from 3-point land. 

The loss was the fifth straight for the Griffs dropping the Blue and Gold to 8-17 overall and 6-10 in the MAAC, while the victory improves Quinnipiac to 23-3 overall and a perfect 15-0 against MAAC opponents. 

Hoohuli wasn't the only Griff who was having a good day, junior Crystal Porter scored 20 points and added eight boards and three blocks in 37 minutes of action, Tiahana Mills had six dimes and 14 points and freshman Abby Schwenk, who made her third career start, scored a career-high 14 points. 

Canisius was on fire from the field today, making 34 of it's 57 shots from the floor and shooting 61.1% from 3-point land, but the team struggled from the free-throw line this afternoon, making just 46.2% of it's attempts. The Bobcats shot just 46.7% from the field, but also shot 72.4% from the charity-line, including 8-10 in overtime.

With 9:23 left in regulation, Canisius was down 56-54 to the Bobcats and this is where the two teams would go back and forth. There were 23 lead changes or ties in the last nine minutes of action. The teams were fighting to the finish and with 15 seconds left, Crystal Porter put the Griffs up 77-74 on a lay-up, assisted by Tamara Miskovic. The Griffs were playing tight defense but Jasmine Martin of Quinnipiac with seven seconds left hit a 3-pointer to tie the game and send it into overtime.

In the extra five minutes of action, neither team would lead by more than three points, but after the game was tied 85-85 with 50 seconds left to play, the Bobcats hit three foul shots and secured the victory over the Griffs. Quinnipiac outscored the Griffs 11-8 in the overtime aciton.

The Bobcats were led by Nikoline Ostergard and Val Driscoll, as the forward and center combined for 11-14 shooting and 36 points (18 each). 

The next game for Canisius will be on Friday, Feb. 20 when the Griffs host the RIder Broncs at 7:00 p.m. at the Koessler Athletic Center 

Game Notes: With the loss to the Bobcats, Canisius falls to 0-5 all-time against the MAAC foe, including 0-2 this season...Schwenk's 14 points was a total of eight points more than here previous career-high (6)...four of the Griffs five starters scored in double-figures, with Emily Weber just missing the mark, scoring six of her own...Canisius shot 72.0 percent in the second half, the highest total since the team shot 60 percent against Saint Peter's earlier this season..the 34 made field-goals from Canisius was a season high...the OT game was just the second this season for the Griffs.
