Griffs Fall to MAAC Foe Quinnipiac

Box Score

The Golden Griffins women's basketball team fell to 5-9 and 3-2 in MAAC play after a 86-66 loss to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Foe Quinnipiac. With the win the Bobcats move to 13-3 and a perfect 5-0 in MAAC play.

“We struggled in the first half and just got too anxious which led to a handful of turnovers that we need to improve on,” said head coach Terry Zeh. “You play real hard on the defensive end and then we tried to keep up that pace on the offensive end, but as a team we need to slow it down offensively, but in the same sense, we didn't get any transition baskets either, we need to get those to make the offense easier.”

The first half of play saw the Bobcats take a 37-28 lead, as the visiting team shot 48.4% from the field, over eight percent better than the Griffs. After the first 20 minutes of play, the Golden Griffins team was led by junior Tiahana Mills who finished the half with eight points on four of seven shooting and also had three assists and two rebounds and fellow junior Crystal Porter who recorded seven points and six boards in the first 20 minutes.  Mills would finish the game with 13 points, six assists and five rebounds, and Emily Weber scored 12 points on four of seven shooting on the floor.

Canisius entered the second half only down nine points, but the Bobcats started to pull away 10 minutes into the half. Turnovers were the real downfall for the Griffs as head coach Terry Zeh stated earlier. The Griffs turned the ball over 27 times to the Bobcats 18, leading to 20 points for the visiting MAAC foe.

The next game for the Golden Griffins will be against another MAAC opponent, Siena, as the Griffs will take on the Saints Sunday, January 11th at 2:00 p.m. at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Game Notes: This is the third time this season that Mills has been the teams leading scorer (Nov. 21 vs. Bryant/Dec. 11 vs. Binghamton)…The Griffs have never beaten Quinnipiac in the teams four meetings, including tonight's loss….Tiahana Mills ended her streak of 25 games with a steal tonight as the junior failed to register one against the Bobcats….senior Kayla Hoohuli struggled in the game after being injured in the first half, only notching three points on 1-4 shooting…Crystal Porter has at least six rebounds in seven of the Griffs 14 games this season.
