Baseball Loses Series Finale To Siena

Box Score

The Canisius baseball team dropped its second consecutive MAAC series by dropping the rubber game in a 6-3 loss to Siena College at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins are now 20-13 overall and 8-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Sophomore Brett Siddall went 3-for-4 while junior Jesse Puscheck and sophomore Anthony Massicci each had two hits for the Golden Griffins.

Canisius scored the first two runs of the game on opposite-field homers. In the first inning, junior Connor Panas hit a ball off the top of the fence in left-center and it bounced over the fence for his third homer of the season. In the second inning, Puscheck went the other way to left field to put the Griffs up 2-0 with his third homer of the year.

Siena (8-24, 6-2 MAAC) tied the game in the top of the fourth by putting together three hits off Canisius starter Devon Stewart. A one-out, two-RBI single up the middle from John Rooney knotted the score at 2-2.

The Griffs loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth, but were unable to re-take the lead. The inning started with a single up the middle from Puscheck and a flare to right field from senior Jose Torralba. Siddall followed with a bunt single to the left side of the mound that got past starting pitcher Bryan Goosens and loaded the bases with nobody out. Freshman Christ Conley lined out to short for the first out of the inning, and Goosens induced senior Ronnie Bernick to hit into a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning and keep the game tied.

Siena scored four runs in the top of the seventh, getting a two-out, bases-clearing double down the left-field line from Javier Esquerra and a perfectly placed fly ball down the right-field line from Andres Ortiz that scored another run to give the Saints a 6-2 lead.

The Griffs loaded the bases in the bottom of the iinning, with senior Shane Zimmer working a bases-loaded walk to force home a run. Reliever Kyano Cummings got Puscheck to hit a groundball to first base, with Citro stepping on the bag and then firing home with Dave Hoffman applying the tag on Massicci. The Griffs hit into a double play with the bases loaded for the second time in the game and left 11 runners on base in the game.

Stewart (3-4) took the loss for the Griffs, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings while striking out six. Junior Eric Stolzenburg threw 1.2 scoreless innings of relief while sophomore Iannick Remillard got the final two outs in the ninth.

Canisius continues its eight-game homestand with a mid-week game against St. Bonaventure on Tuesday. First pitch at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 4 p.m.
