Baseball Falls In Final Game At Dayton

The Canisius baseball team dropped its final game at the Flyer Classic, falling 5-3 to the host Dayton Flyers on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins are now 10-7 on the season.

Senior Ronnie Bernick reached base three times on the day, recording a single, walk and hit by pitch. Seniors Jose Torralba and Jesse Kelso also reached base twice, recording a single and a walk. The Griffs hit into a season-high three double plays on the day.

The Griffs got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning with Kelso leading off with a single and Bernick reaching on a HBP. Senior Ryan Coppinger reached on an error, scoring Kelso and put runners at the corners with one out. Junior Jesse Puscheck hit into a double play to end the threat.

Dayton (5-12) scored three runs in the bottom of the third on two hits, taking advantage of two HBP to start the inning from Canisius starter Devon Stewart. The Griffs tied the game in the fifth as Bernick and Torralba led off with back-to-back walks. After a wild pitch, Coppinger scored Bernick with an RBI groundout. After a walk to Puscheck, Luppens scored Torralba with an RBI single to tie the score at 3-3. Sophomore Brett Siddall hit into a double play to end the inning.

Dayton went ahead in the eighth inning, scoring the go-ahead run to go along with an insurance run. A two-out, two-RBI double from Mark Podlas proved to be the game-winning hit. The Griffs got a one-out baserunner in the ninth, but Torralba hit into the third double play of the day for Canisius to end the game.

Stewart (2-2) threw his first complete game of the season, allowing five runs in eight innings and striking out seven.

The two mid-week games at VMI have been cancelled due to an impending snowstorm that is going to his the Lexington, Va. area. Canisius opens MAAC play next weekend when the Golden Griffins host Saint Peter's in a three-game series at the Demske Sports Complex. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for noon.

Game Notes: Canisius is on a four-game losing streak for the first time since April 6-10, 2012… Canisius allowed 17 two-out RBI on the weekend while only producing five two-out RBI of its own… Puscheck extended his on-base streak to 21 games… Siddall hit 8-for-17 (.471) with four RBI on the weekend… Canisius has now lost 10 of its 12 games at the Flyer Classic in its last three appearances
