Pierce Is Dominant In 2-0 Win At East Tenn. St.

Box Score

Junior Rohn Pierce threw a three-hit shutout on 87 pitches as the Canisius baseball team won its third straight game with a 2-0 win over East Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon.

Pierce (2-0) retired the first 10 batters he faced, not allowing a hit until the fourth. The Lockport, N.Y. native quickly erased that baserunner with a double play. East Tennessee State (5-5) had a one-out single in the fifth and led off the sixth with a bunt single, but Pierce allowed only one baserunner to get to second base on the entire day. Pierce retired the final 12 batters of the game for his first career shutout and first nine-inning shutout by a Golden Griffin since Garrett Cortright on March 15, 2013, at Ohio.

The Griffs had runners on base in eight of the nine innings but could never put together a big inning. Canisius loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning and also had two runners on base in the second but failed to capitalize. The Griffs went 3-for-18 with runners on base in the game.

Canisius (5-3) scored both of its runs in the third inning as junior Jesse Puscheck and senior Jimmy Luppens led off with back-to-back doubles to get the Griffs on the board. Sophomore Brett Siddall then used a one-out double to score Luppens and make it 2-0.

Canisius had eight hits, three walks and one HBP in the game but left 12 runners on base. Luppens and Puscheck each had two hits and a walk while sophomore Anthony Massicci had two walks out of the leadoff spot in the lineup.

The Griffs and Bucs wrap up the series on Sunday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
