Pierce Named National Player Of The Week

Junior Rohn Pierce (Lockport, N.Y.) was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week for his performance in the Canisius baseball team's 3-0 win over No. 5/8 North Carolina State in the season opener. Pierce was one of eight players across the country to receive the honor from Collegiate Baseball.

Pierce outdueled All-American Carlos Rodon in the season opener as Pierce threw seven shutout innings in the team's 3-0 win over No. 10 North Carolina State. Pierce scattered five singles, walked one and struck out six on 101 pitches. The 6-foot-3 right-hander didn't allow a base runner past second base. After allowing the first two batters to reach, Pierce retired 21 of the next 25 batters he faced.

Pierce is the third Golden Griffin to claim the award in the last four years. Sophomore Alex Godzak earned the award after throwing the first seven innings of the team's nine-inning no-hitter against Iona on March 29, 2013. Sean Jamieson won the award in 2011.

Canisius returns to the field for a three-game set at Charlotte. The series begins on Friday, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
