Godzak Named MAAC Rookie of the Week

Freshman Alex Godzak was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday. Godzak wins the award for the third time this season, the most of any freshman in the conference.

For the second straight start, Godzak threw six scoreless innings and picked up the win in the Griffs' 22-1 victory over Niagara in the middle game of the weekend series. The 5-foot-9 freshman gave up four hits and walked one while striking out three and needing 73 pitches to earn his third consecutive win. Godzak has not allowed a run in his last 17.1 innings pitched.

Godzak ranks second in the MAAC with a 2.07 ERA and opponents' batting average (.197), third in wins (eight) and fifth in strikeouts (59). Canisius has now won 11 weekly awards from the conference office this season, four more than any other team in the MAAC. Godzak ranks 30th in the country in ERA among left-handed pitchers and sixth among freshman southpaws in the category.

Canisius (37-13) plays its final road game of the 2013 regular season against Youngstown State on Tuesday morning. First pitch at Eastwood Field, the home of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, in Niles, Ohio is set for 11 a.m.
