SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore
Danika Martinez tied a MAAC Championship record with 36 points to lead Iona to
a 76-58 win over the Canisius women's basketball team in the quarterfinals of
the 2013 MAAC Championship at the MassMutual Center on Thursday morning. The
Golden Griffins see their season come to an end with a 12-19 overall record.
Junior
Jamie Ruttle led Canisius with 13
points while senior Ashley Durham
had 10 points in 35 minutes. Sophomore Brooke
Angelos had five points, six rebounds and six assists in 32 minutes.
"Damika
showed why she is the Player of the Year and Joy showed why she is the Rookie
of the Year. Iona is a very talented team, and we saw that today," Canisius
coach Terry Zeh said. "Their
pressure got to us a little bit in the first half that let Iona get some
separation. We just didn't have any answers today for guarding Damika or stopping
Joy inside."
Iona
(19-11) made 10 of its first 14 shots and took a 23-13 lead midway through the
first half. The Griffs battled back, scoring seven straight points to get
within three points. A layup from Ruttle, 3-pointer from Durham and layup from
junior Jen Morabito made it 25-22.
The Gaels made their final three shots of the first half, using a 12-5 run to
hold a 37-25 lead at the half.
The
Gaels broke the game open by scoring the first five points of the second half,
getting a 3-pointer from Martinez and layup from Aleesha Powell. Canisius could
never make a run to get the deficit into single digits as Iona shot 51.7
percent from the floor and 8-of-14 from behind the arc.
Martinez
was 14-of-23 from the floor, including 6-of-9 on 3-pointers, to score the 36
points. Joy Adams had a double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds. The Gaels
scored 32 points in the paint.
