Junior
Jimmy Luppens was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday,
while freshman Brett Siddall was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week. Luppens is named Player of
the Week for the second time in his career while Siddall earns the award for
the second time this season.
Luppens
hit .579 (11-for-19) with three home runs and 13 RBI in the four-game sweep at
Ohio University. Luppens' best performance came in a 16-8 win in game three of
the series when the Wading River, N.Y. native went 3-for-5 with three home runs
and eight RBI, including a three-run homer in the top of the ninth that broke
an 8-8 tie. Luppens also had the game-winning RBI in game two, with his RBI
single in the top of the eighth putting Canisius up 8-7. The 5-foot-11 junior
had multiple hits in each game and extended his hitting streak to 19 games,
dating back to last season.
Luppens
leads the MAAC in batting average (.481) and RBI (20) and is tied for the MAAC
lead in home runs (three). Luppens also was named the MAAC Player of the Week during his sophomore season on April 2.
Siddall
led the Canisius offense with a .615 batting average (8-for-13) in the
four-game sweep of Ohio University. The 6-foot freshman also recorded six RBI
and scored three runs on the weekend. Siddall recorded a hit in all four games,
including two three-hit performances and going 2-for-2 in his two pinch-hit
appearances.
Luppens
gives Canisius the MAAC Player of the Week for the second consecutive week with
junior Jesse Kelso claiming the
award last week. Siddall was also named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on March 4.
Canisius (14-5),
winners in nine of its last 10 games, opens MAAC play against Saint Peter's
this weekend at the Demske Sports Complex. The
three-game series starts with a doubleheader on Saturday, with first pitch set
for 11 a.m.
