The
Canisius baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Ohio University with a
6-2 win on Sunday afternoon, the first four-game road sweep for the Griffs since a four-game sweep at Mount St. Mary's in 2008. The Golden Griffins improve to 14-5 overall and
have won nine of their last 10 games.
Senior
Christian Segar went 4-for-4 with
two runs scored while junior Jimmy
Luppens went 2-for-3 with two walks. Sophomore catcher Mike Booth went 2-for-5 while junior Jose Torralba scored two runs.
The
Griffs got on the board in the first inning as Segar singled with one out and
eventually scored on an RBI single from Luppens. The Griffs added a run in the
third when Segar again singled with one out, moved to second on an error, stole
third and scored on an RBI groundout from junior Shane Zimmer.
The
Griffs took a 5-0 lead with a three-run top of the fourth. Torralba reached on
an error and junior Ronnie Bernick
singled to shortstop. An RBI single from sophomore Mike Krische scored Torralba. Segar followed with an RBI single
while Kelso scored Krische with an RBI groundout.
The
Bobcats (3-15) got two back in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-2. Canisius
pushed across a run in the eighth as Torralba led off with a double and moved to
third on a sacrifice bunt from Bernick. A two-out, pinch-hit, RBI single from
freshman Brett Siddall scored
Torralba and put the Griffs up by four.
Freshman
Alex Godzak picked up his second
consecutive win by allowing two runs on five hits, walking three and striking
out four in seven innings. Juniors Tyler
Soucie and Jon Fitzsimmons each
threw a scoreless innings of relief to close out the victory.
Canisius
opens its home and conferences schedules this weekend with a three-game series
against Saint Peter's University. First pitch for the doubleheader on Saturday
is set for 11 a.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.
Notes: Canisius hit .414 as a team in the series, outscoring the Bobcats 44-17 in the four games... Canisius had its best fielding weekend of the season, recording two errors in 150 chances and posting a .987 fielding percentage... Canisius now has 12 road victories in 2013... Canisius has scored in the first inning in 13 of its 19 games... Bernick scored 11 runs in the four games... Booth extended his hitting streak to five games (7-for-19)... Fitzsimmons is yet to allow an earned run on the season (13 innings)... Godzak has a 1.69 ERA in his last three appearances (16 innings)...
