Using
a dominant pitching performance from junior Garrett Cortright in the opener and rallying for a 7-4 deficit
after six innings by scoring six unanswered runs in the nightcap, the Canisius
baseball team swept a doubleheader at Ohio University on Friday afternoon.
Canisius won 12-0 and 10-7 to improve to 12-5 overall. The Griffs have won
eight of their last nine games with the sweep and improve to 10-4 on the road.
Ten
Golden Griffins had multiple hits on the day with junior Jimmy Luppens going 6-for-11 with four RBI. Senior Chris Gruarin was 5-for-12 with two
homers while junior Jesse Kelso was
4-for-9 with three runs scored, a double and a triple. In game one, junior Ryan Coppinger was 4-for-4 with three
RBI while freshman Brett
Siddall was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Junior Ronnie Bernick reached base seven times and scored seven runs,
posting five walks and hitting his first career homer.
Game One - Canisius 12, Ohio 0
Junior
Garrett Cortright (5-0) posted the
first shutout of his career, allowing six hits, walking two and striking out
two in the nine innings. Cortright retired the first six batters of the game as
well as the final seven batters. The 6-foot-5 righty won for the fifth time in
five starts in 2013 and now has a 0.97 ERA in 37 innings.
The
Griffs went down in order once in the nine innings and scored 10 of their 12
runs in the game with two outs. Canisius got on the board with two unearned
runs in the second inning. Sophomore Connor
Panas reached on a one-out single to second base and scored when the left
fielder misplayed a two-out fly ball from Bernick. The Griffs took
advantage of the extra out with a double from Coppinger, his second hit in as
many innings, to go up 2-0.
Siddall
had a two-out, two-run double in the sixth while Luppens followed with an RBI
single. Coppinger had a two-out, two-RBI single in the seventh with Siddall following
with an RBI single. Gruarin hit a two-run homer in the eighth while senior Brooklyn Foster later scored on a
passed ball and sophomore Mike Krische
had an RBI single.
Game Two - Canisius 10, Ohio 7
Canisius
hit three homers in the second game, starting with a one-out homer from Kelso
in the top of the first. Ohio scored one in the bottom of the first before the
Griffs used the second homer of the day from Gruarin and an RBI single from
junior Jose Torralba in the third to
go up 3-1. The Bobcats scored a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to
go up 4-3, and the Griffs would tie the game in the sixth. Bernick led off with
a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior Christian Segar and scored on a one-out RBI single from Luppens.
Ohio
(3-13) took a 7-4 lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the
Griffs would score the final six runs of the game for the win. Sophomore Mike Booth drew a one-out walk, and
Torralba extended the inning by reaching on catcher's interference with two
outs. The Griffs again took advantage with the first career homer from Bernick to
knot the score at 7-7.
The
Griffs took the lead for good in the eighth with Kelso leading off with a
triple and scoring on a single from Luppens. Gruarin eventually scored Luppens
with a one-out RBI single to make it 9-7. The Griffs pushed their lead to three
with another insurance run in the ninth. Bernick was hit by a pitch, moved to
second on a sacrifice bunt from Segar and scored on an RBI single from Luppens.
Five
pitchers saw action for the Griffs in the game. Sophomore Rohn Pierce allowed three runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
Redshirt freshman Iannick Remillard
allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits in two innings. The trio of
sophomore Eric Stolzenburg,
sophomore Aaron Casper and junior Jon Fitzsimmons combined for 3.1
scoreless innings. Casper earned his first win of the season while Fitzsimmons
retired all six batters he faced for his second save of 2013.
Canisius
and Ohio are scheduled to continue the four-game series on Saturday, with first
pitch for the single game set for 1 p.m.
Notes: Canisius
and Ohio met for the first time since the 2003 season when the Bobcats swept a
three-game series from the Griffs... The shutout from Cortright is the first
nine-inning shutout by a Golden Griffin since Mike Goemans had a one-hitter
against Manhattan on May 9, 2010... Canisius had shutouts in back-to-back games
for the first time since May 5, 2012, when the Griffs held Iona scoreless in a
doubleheader... The 20 hits for the Griffs in the opener were a season high and
the most since they had 28 at Morehead State on March 22, 2011... Canisius won
for the third time this season when trailing after the sixth inning. The Griffs
had four such wins last season... Canisius had three homers in the first 16 games
before their three homers in the second game of the day... Canisius has at
least two stolen bases in eight straight games.
