Golf in Fifth Place at Cornell Invitational

Canisius College senior golfer Mike Spiotta and freshman Andrew Romano are tied for sixth place after each player shot a one-over par score of 73 in the first round of the Cornell Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Robert Trent Jones Course on Cornell's campus in Ithaca, N.Y. As a team, the Golden Griffins are in fifth-place out of 13 teams in the field with a team score of 301.

Spiotta's score of 73 came after he posted a 35 on the front nine and a 38 on the back, while Romano went out in 38 and closed the round with a score of 35 on the back. Senior Michael Carrig is tied for 11th in the field after he posted a three-over par score of 75. Cornell's Zach Bosse leads the field after 18 holes with a two-under score of 70.

St. Bonaventure posted a team score of 294 to claim the 18-hole lead in the team event. Two-time tournament champion Binghamton is in second place with a score of 297, while Fordham (298), Bucknell (300) and Canisius round out the top-five.

Heavy rains and previously wet course conditions in Ithaca forced a four-hour delay during the first round, as the course's grounds crew tried to clear standing water on the par-72, 6,890 track. The event has been shortened to 36 holes, with the second and final round starting tomorrow, Sept. 23, with players going off at 8 a.m.
