The
Canisius College baseball team fell to Penn State Unviersity 4-3 in 11 innings
at Medlar Field on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins fall to 17-16 on the
season.
Sophomore
Jose Torralba led Canisius with
three hits in six at-bats and was the only Golden Griffin to have a multi-hit
day. Junior Manny Hernandez had
three walks in his five plate appearances while sophomore Shane Zimmer also reached base three times.
Canisius
got on the board in the first inning, as Torralba led off with a single and
advanced all the way to third base on an error by the right fielder. After Penn
State starter Joe Kurrasch struck out junior Christian Segar and senior Drew
Pettit sandwiched around a walk to Zimmer, sophomore Jimmy Luppens beat out an infield single to score Torralba and make
it 1-0.
Freshman
Devon Stewart didn't allow a run in
the first five innings, retiring the first eight batters he faced and only allowing
three baserunners in those five innings. A one-out, solo homer in the sixth from
Sean Deegan tied the game at 1-1. Penn State (12-18) took the lead in the
seventh, scoring two unearned runs after the Stewart retired the first two
batters. A Canisius error on the next batter extended the inning, as Elliot Searer had
an RBI single and Stewart hit Steve Snyder with the bases loaded to give Penn
State a 3-1 lead.
Canisius
came right back in the top of the eighth, knotting the score at 3-3. A
pinch-hit single from freshman Connor
Panas started the rally and Zimmer brought him home with a double to center.
Pettit was hit by a pitch and a sacrifice bunt from Luppens put two runners
into scoring position. An intentional walk to Hernandez loaded the bases and a
sacrifice fly from sophomore Jesse Kelso
tied the score at 3-3.
The
Griffs had their best chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth, loading
the bases with one out. Reliever Tim Dunn came into the game and got Luppens to
hit into a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning. The Nittany Lions had
runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the 10th,
but sophomore closer Jon Fitzsimmons
induced Luis Montesinos to hit into a double play and send the game to the 11th.
After
Canisius was retired in order in the top of the 11th, Alex Farkes
drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A one-out walk to
Searer put two runners on base, and a single to right from Deegan gave the
Nittany Lions the walkoff win.
Stewart
allowed three runs, one earned, in his seven innings of work while striking out
nine. Redshirt junior Nathan Linseman
didn't allow a run in his two-thirds of an inning. Fitzsimmons (1-1) took the
loss, allowing one run in 2.2 innings of relief.
Canisius
and Penn State conclude the weekend series on Sunday, with first pitch set for
1:05 p.m.
Notes: Canisius
is now 4-9 in one-run games this season and 3-2 in extra innings... Zimmer
extended his consecutive games streak of reaching base to 40 games... Junior Chris Gruarin did not start for the
first time this season... The nine strikeouts by Stewart are the most by a Canisius
freshman since Alex Nimigon had 11 strikeouts against Fairfield on April 2, 2000... That total is also the most by a Golden
Griffin this season and most since Shane Davis had nine against Iona on March
26, 2011... Torralba extended his hitting streak to seven games (13-for-31).
