The
Canisius College baseball team scored 10 consecutive runs to take control en
route to a 10-6 win over the University of Akron at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio
on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Griffins improve to 22-21 on the season.
Five
Golden Griffins had multi-hit games, with sophomore Jimmy Luppens going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Sophomore Jesse Kelso was also
2-for-4, scoring two runs while sophomore Ryan
Coppinger was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Mike Booth and sophomore Jose Torralba also had two-hit days.
Akron
took the early 2-0 lead on a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first from Sam
Trecaso. Canisius tied the game with single runs in the third and fourth
innings. Sophomore Shane Zimmer drew
a two-out walk in the third, stole second and then scored on a single from Luppens.
In the fourth, Kelso led off the inning with a single. A walk to Booth and a
throwing error from the Akron pitcher allowed Torralba to score and loaded the
bases. Freshman Connor Panas drew a
bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 2-2.
Canisius
continued its stretch of 10
unanswered runs with three in the top of the fifth, taking the lead. Luppens and junior Chris
Gruarin led off with singles and a one-out walk to junior Manny Hernandez loaded the bases. RBI
singles from Coppinger. Booth and Panas gave Canisius the three-run lead.
The
Griffs broke the game open with five runs in the top of the sixth, which
started with walks to Luppens and Gruarin. After a single from Kelso loaded the
bases, sophomore Ronnie Bernick
followed with an RBI single to score Luppens. A balk forced home a run and
Coppinger was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases. Pinch hitter Drew Pettit singled through the right
side to score Kelso and make it 8-2. The second Akron error of the game allowed
Bernick to score and a bases-loaded walk, the fourth free pass of the inning,
forced home Coppinger and put Canisius up 10-2.
Seven
Canisius pitchers threw for the Griffs on the day. Freshman Rohn Pierce received the start and
allowed two runs in 2.1 innings. Freshman Eric
Stolzenburg earned his first collegiate win, throwing 1.2 scoreless
