The
University at Buffalo scored 13 consecutive runs en route to defeating the
Canisius College baseball team 13-4 on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Griffins
fall to 17-18 on the season.
Canisius
took the quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as junior Chris Gruarin singled to right with one out. He moved to second on
a groundout and scored on a Buffalo error. The Bulls then scored 13 consecutive
runs - getting five runs in the first inning to chase Canisius starter Rohn Pierce. Buffalo (8-19) then scored
four runs in the second, two in the fourth and two in the fifth to build the
12-run lead.
Canisius
added three runs in the eighth on an RBI grounder from sophomore Jose Torralba, an RBI single from
sophomore Ryan Coppinger and a sacrifice
fly from freshman Connor Panas.
Pierce
(1-3) took the loss while freshmen Eric
Stolzenburg and Aaron Casper,
junior Jason Rubenstein and redshirt
junior Nathan Linseman combined to
allow one run over the final 5.2 innings.
Alex
Baldock was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI for Buffalo. Tom Murphy
went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI while Jason Kanzler and Matt
Pollock also had two hits apiece for the Bulls. Michael Burke (3-3) allowed one
unearned run over seven innings while striking out seven and walking none to
earn the win.
Canisius
resumes conference play with a three-game series at Saint Peter's this weekend.
First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader in Jersey City, N.J. is set for noon.
Notes:
Canisius lost to Buffalo for the third time in the last 11 meetings... The Griffs
had not allowed a first-inning run since March 7, against Buffalo (a span of 22
games). Prior to Tuesday's game, the Griffs had allowed three first-inning runs
total in 34 games this season... Sophomore Jose
Torralba saw his eight-game hitting streak come to an end.
