Buffalo Cruises Past Baseball

The University at Buffalo scored 13 consecutive runs en route to defeating the Canisius College baseball team 13-4 on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Griffins fall to 17-18 on the season.

Canisius took the quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as junior Chris Gruarin singled to right with one out. He moved to second on a groundout and scored on a Buffalo error. The Bulls then scored 13 consecutive runs - getting five runs in the first inning to chase Canisius starter Rohn Pierce. Buffalo (8-19) then scored four runs in the second, two in the fourth and two in the fifth to build the 12-run lead.

Canisius added three runs in the eighth on an RBI grounder from sophomore Jose Torralba, an RBI single from sophomore Ryan Coppinger and a sacrifice fly from freshman Connor Panas.

Pierce (1-3) took the loss while freshmen Eric Stolzenburg and Aaron Casper, junior Jason Rubenstein and redshirt junior Nathan Linseman combined to allow one run over the final 5.2 innings.

Alex Baldock was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI for Buffalo. Tom Murphy went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI while Jason Kanzler and Matt Pollock also had two hits apiece for the Bulls. Michael Burke (3-3) allowed one unearned run over seven innings while striking out seven and walking none to earn the win.

Canisius resumes conference play with a three-game series at Saint Peter's this weekend. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader in Jersey City, N.J. is set for noon.

Notes: Canisius lost to Buffalo for the third time in the last 11 meetings... The Griffs had not allowed a first-inning run since March 7, against Buffalo (a span of 22 games). Prior to Tuesday's game, the Griffs had allowed three first-inning runs total in 34 games this season... Sophomore Jose Torralba saw his eight-game hitting streak come to an end.
