Freshman
Devon Stewart was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the
Week, the conference office announced today.
Stewart
went seven innings and struck out nine in a no-decision at Penn State on
Saturday. The freshman righty allowed three runs, one earned, in his start
while giving up six hits and walking two. His nine strikeouts were the most by
a Canisius pitcher this season and most by a Canisius freshman pitcher since
Alex Nimigon had 11 strikeouts on April 2, 2000, against Fairfield. Stewart
retired the first eight batters of the game and only allowed two runners past
first base in the first five innings.
Stewart
is the fourth Golden Griffin to be honored this season and second to be named
MAAC Rookie of the Week. Fellow freshman Rohn
Pierce was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on March 6. Sophomore Jimmy Luppens was named the MAAC Player
of the Week on April 2, while redshirt junior Nathan Linseman was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 28.
Canisius
resumes conference play with a three-game series at Saint Peter's this weekend.
First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader in Jersey City, N.J. is set for noon.
